The DNR is seeking to hire one (1) Community Engagement Support Specialist at our central office in Saint Paul, MN. This position supports the planning and execution of the DNR’s events program and community engagement for the DNR’s conservation magazine, Minnesota Conservation Volunteer (MCV). The incumbent communicates and coordinates between the Office of Communication and Outreach (OCO), DNR regions and divisions, event partners, host communities, schools, and public and private sector organizations.
Responsibilities
Assist in the execution of major events for the agency, including planning, setup, staffing, and post‑event breakdown and debriefing.
Support outreach and community engagement initiatives for MCV, maintaining and growing existing programs and expanding awareness to new demographics.
Execute critical communication tasks for public awareness and event participation, such as internal and external webpage content, social media posts, press releases, newsletters, promotional materials, media interviews, and public speaking.
Minimum Qualifications
One (1) year of professional level experience in communications, marketing, and outreach.
A bachelor’s degree in business, education, communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a closely related field may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
Knowledge of project management best practices and experience planning and implementing communication strategies.
Ability to collect and analyze program‑related data, regulatory requirements, and procedural steps for program approval.
Skillful communication via email, press releases, social media, web, and reports using AP style.
Strong human‑relations skills for collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to motivate volunteers and cross‑functional groups without direct authority.
Capacity to use scissors, ladders, detergents, and other mechanical tools during events.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Proficiency with video, audio, photo, and graphic editing software, including Adobe Creative Suite.
Experience staffing events with attendance over 500.
Experience with fiscal, purchasing, and budgeting processes.
Experience presenting to or engaging with students of diverse age groups.
Experience writing or editing content about natural resource issues and outdoor recreation.
Experience with crisis communication and managing sensitive issues.
Interpersonal skills for working with media, government, and community partners.
Additional Requirements
Unrestricted Class D driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Occasional in‑state, same‑day, and overnight travel to DNR events.
Ability to meet physical requirements and work in environmental conditions, with or without reasonable accommodations.
