This position may be hired at either the Manager or Senior Manager level depending on the candidate's experience and qualifications.

Driven by innovative approaches to education, advocacy, housing, leadership development, and workforce pathways, CROP works to reduce recidivism and create opportunities for justice-impacted individuals. Founded by leaders with direct lived experience in the criminal justice system, CROPs programs aim to transform lives and communities.

What Youll Do

The Communications & Development Manager is the engine that converts CROPs impact into visibility, credibility, and revenue.

Youll design and execute an annual communications plan tied to revenue targets, program milestones, and the policy calendar. Youll translate outcomes and participant stories into donor-ready assetscases for support, sponsor decks, appeals, and impact briefswhile managing an integrated editorial calendar across email, web, social, press, and events. Youll drive digital performance by growing and segmenting lists, A/B testing messages, optimizing donation pathways, and reporting on key metrics.

Partnering with Programs, youll turn data and lived experience into ethical, compelling stories. With Policy and PR partners, youll elevate thought leadership and pitch media centering participant voices. Youll fuel campaigns and eventsfrom invitations to post?event follow?upswhile keeping systems clean and compliant. Finally, youll equip staff and alumni as authentic ambassadors, bridging understanding between participants, donors, employers, and partners to advance CROPs mission.

Strategic Communications & Brand

  • Build and execute an annual communications plan aligned to revenue goals, program milestones, and policy moments
  • Maintain brand consistency (voice, visuals, accessibility) across all platforms and materials
  • Coordinate with executive leadership on messaging for public speaking, fundraising, media, campaigns, and advocacy

Development Operations & Fundraising Communications
  • Manage fundraising & awareness campaigns within our CRM (this includes building segmented donor lists, creating and scheduling campaign workflows, and ensuring data accuracy across all records and supporting gift tracking, acknowledgment processes, and donor pipeline management)
  • Manage online donor communications and create segmented and automated donor journeys (welcome, nurture, renewals, lapsed?winbacks)
  • Co?create fundraising content with Development Director (case statements, sponsor decks, funder briefs, LOIs, grant narratives, impact updates)
  • Turn program outcomes into donor?ready collateral: data snapshots, success stories, short videos, and impact receipts
  • Coordinate campaign timelines and ensure on?time, conversion?oriented delivery

Content Development & Management
  • Create and oversee a content calendar supporting awareness, engagement, and fundraising
  • Write, edit, and design newsletters, impact reports, social posts, press releases, blogs, fundraising appeals, and campaign collateral
  • Oversee podcast scheduling and coordination, including guest communication and distribution
  • Maintain and update CROPs website (Squarespace) to ensure content is current, engaging, and aligned with our brand and mission
  • Collaborate with staff to publish blog posts, event pages, and campaign updates
  • Monitor analytics and implement improvements for user experience
  • Package program learnings into stories with quotes, photos, and video/social cuts

Public Relations & Media
  • Liaise with PR partners; pitch human?centered stories and place op?eds with the Policy Team
  • Prepare talking points and media kits, manage inbound media requests
  • Manage and grow CROPs social media presence across platforms
  • Monitor engagement and optimize content for reach and impact
  • Support staff in becoming effective ambassadors on social platforms

Special Projects
  • Coordinate logistics for in?person and remote events with stakeholders
  • Support other special projects, which may include audits, annual reports, surveys, fundraising initiatives, sourcing bids from vendors, and other duties as needed
  • Maintain and improve documentation and files
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support organizational goals

A NOTE ABOUT THIS ROLE

We know this job description is ambitiouswe're looking for someone who can move fluidly between communications, development, and digital strategy. Responsibilities will fluctuate throughout the year based on organizational priorities and the fundraising calendar. We're open to candidates who excel in one area (communications or development) and are excited to build skills in the other.

Essential Requirements
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States
  • 3+ years experience in communications, development, marketing, and/or digital media, preferably in the nonprofit or social impact sector
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills
  • Demonstrated experience managing digital platforms, social media strategy, and content calendars
  • Proficient in design, CRM software, and email tools like Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Mailchimp, or similar platforms

  • Experience with movement building and narrative shift: Understands how storytelling and strategic communications can influence public perception, shift narratives, and support advocacy goals.

  • Project management and execution: Plans and implements projects from start to finish. Sets clear timelines and deliverables. Adapts plans based on feedback and changing circumstances while maintaining momentum toward goals.
  • Managing content calendars and campaigns: Coordinates content across platforms and teams. Maintains a consistent publishing rhythm and aligns messaging with organizational priorities.

Benefits

This full?time, exempt position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare, holidays, and paid time off. The salary range for this position is $84,000 - $110,000 per year.

Schedule

This is a full?time, 40 hour per week, hybrid position. General hours of employment are 9:00 AM 5:00 PM, Monday Friday. The role requires regular presence in our Oakland office.

Supervision

This role is supervised by the President.
