Job Summary and Responsibilities: The Neuroscience Publications Department at Barrow Neurological Institute leads the academic publishing industry in author services focused entirely on the neurosciences. We provide editorial and media expertise to support residents, fellows, attending physicians, and researchers at Barrow. Our illustrators, animators, graphic artists, and multimedia specialists work closely with authors to create elegant, accurate visual content using the latest industry standards and technology (including a state‑of‑the‑art render farm) to achieve higher visibility and faster publication. Neuroscience Publications is seeking a full‑time Technical Artist to join our team! The candidate will support 3D animation production, pipeline support and automation, tool design/workflows, compositing, effects, and virtualization/workstation support to advance the academic publishing mission of all Barrow departments, including Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Research.

Essential Functions

  • Assist Senior Technical 3D Artist with building custom tools and pipeline scripts for animation production and general department needs.
  • Provide technical assistance to the medical animation team for 3D scene files, solving render problems, 3D scene optimization, and automation.
  • Backend render farm support, systems orchestration, backups management, and render wrangling.
  • Support 3D asset archiving and cataloging.
  • Documentation of new production tools and workflows.
  • Collaborate with Barrow Informatics to ensure compliance with cybersecurity and network policies.

Job Requirements

  • Expertise (1‑3 years experience preferred) with 3D computer animation, compositing, tool creation, and pipeline design.
  • Expertise with CG software Maya, Houdini, Fusion Studio, and After Effects.
  • Pipeline development, script writing, and automation with Python, MEL, PyMel, PySide, C++, Lua, and bash.
  • Advanced shading, rigging, and special effects as demonstrated in portfolio.
  • 3D animation production, art, and compositing experience.
  • Proficiency with render distribution software.
  • Expertise with Windows and Linux operating systems and Proxmox virtualization.
  • Understanding of version control, color management, and CG data interchange.
  • Experience working with OpenUSD API.
  • Familiarity with tools for monitoring CG system performance and health.
  • Knowledgeable in new technologies related to graphics, CG pipelines, and IT infrastructure.

Preferred Software Skills

Maya, Houdini, V‑Ray, Fusion Studio (or Fusion in DaVinci Resolve), Python, MEL, PyMel, PySide, Lua, C++, After Effects, Substance Designer, Nuke, render distribution manager software, database software, Proxmox, Linux, Windows, Docker, Blender, Cinema 4D, Unreal, Unity.

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, technical art, digital art, or related field required.

1‑3 years of experience in pipeline and 3D animation production preferred.

Location

Located in Phoenix, AZ. In‑person, full‑time position with benefits. Individuals must live within driving distance of the Barrow campus.

Compensation

$32.38 – $48.17 /hour
