Join the Southside SPCA, a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to rescuing, sheltering, and finding loving homes for animals in need. Through community outreach, education, and compassionate care, we aim to create a Southside Virginia where every animal is safe, respected, and valued. We are seeking a Development and Communication Director to lead our fundraising efforts to continue and expand our lifesaving work.

About Us

The Southside SPCA is dedicated to the welfare of companion animals in Southside Virginia. We serve a 12‑county area, which includes Amelia, Appomattox, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mechlenburg, Nottoway and Prince Edward counties. We are a no‑kill organization, headquartered in Meherrin, VA, where we operate our shelter. During 2024, we rescued, cared for, adopted, and spayed or neutered over 3,000 companion animals.

About the Role

The Development and Communication Director position is the driving force behind all fundraising activities including individual giving and major gifts, corporate partnerships and events. This position works closely with the Board, volunteers, staff and the community to build relationships and secure financial support for a strong and sustainable future for the shelter.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee and execute annual fundraising goals and plans.
• Create compelling content and communicate with individual donors and the public through newsletters, digital platforms, direct mail, print materials and social media.
• Identify and cultivate individual donors and corporate sponsorships.
• Establish and maintain strong donor relationships.
• Plan and execute donor and community events.
• Oversee management of donor database software (eTapestry).
• Manage website updates.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree preferred or a combination of education and related work experience.
• Previous fundraising and social media experience preferred.
• Persuasive verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong project management and organizational skills.

• Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team.
• Comfortable working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience with Microsoft Office platforms and Google Suite.
• Experience with databases and data analysis.
• Ability to quickly learn, use and optimize software programs.

Salary and Benefits

• Salary range is $55,000-$65,000.
• Generous PTO.
