Job Description
The University of South Florida, a preeminent research university and AAU member, seeks to fill a 9‑month, full‑time tenure‑earning Assistant Professor of Communication position specializing in media and computational methods in the Department of Communication. A PhD in Communication or a related field is required; ABD candidates may be considered provided the degree is conferred by the appointment start date of August 7 2026.
The ideal candidate is a quantitative social scientist conducting theory‑driven, empirical communication research using computational methods. Candidates should have a strong research record, a demonstrated ability to obtain external funding, and the potential for tenure at a research‑1 institution. Preferred expertise includes editorial, AI, public health, identity, social media and related topics, and familiarity with qualitative methods is welcomed.
Responsibilities
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, including quantitative methods, computational methods, persuasion, and media, in a variety of modalities. Integrate computational social science topics into courses (e.g., Python or R). Mentor master’s and doctoral students as appropriate.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in Communication or a related field from an accredited institution.
- A demonstrated record or promise of achievement in quantitative social‑scientific research on media and computational methods, meeting university criteria for Assistant Professor appointment.
- Demonstrated record or potential for obtaining external funding.
Preferred Qualifications
- Record of research that demonstrates the ability to earn tenure at a research‑1 institution.
- Ability to speak to the implications of research for difference, belonging, and representation.
- Conversant with qualitative approaches to communication.
- Experience teaching courses in communication or related fields, especially quantitative methods, computational methods, persuasion and media.
- Potential to mentor master’s and doctoral students.
