Essential Functions

Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance; understands 21st century literacy skills; communicates information services effectively with students, peers, administrators, and community; provides access to and stays current with all formats of information; selects appropriate materials; evaluates and improves media services to meet changing needs and student achievement.

Major Responsibilities

Instructional Partnership

  • Collaboratively plans instruction and develops the library media program using state and district curricula and standards, instructional calendars, effective strategies, resources, and data to support teachers and address differentiated needs of all students.
  • Meets with teachers and administrators regularly to develop clear, logical, sequential, and integrated plans.
  • Collaborates to provide flexible, consistent, and personalized approaches to academic content, connecting the research process and information literacy to standards and student needs.
  • Assesses student understanding and progress throughout learning activities by asking questions, observing work in progress, evaluating artifacts, and communicating with teachers.
  • Chooses and recommends print and online resources that support instruction for diverse learners.

Role of Reading

The school library media specialist promotes a culture of reading as a foundation for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment.

  • Promotes current, high-quality, high-interest collections in multiple formats.
  • Encourages independent reading and self-selection.
  • Supports reading aloud, booktalks, displays, author visits, and school-wide reading initiatives.
  • Models a culture of reading through instruction.
  • Supports initiatives to engage learners in reading, writing, and listening for understanding.

Information and Technology Literacy

The school library media specialist provides instruction addressing information, media, and technology literacies.

  • Guides students and teachers to appropriate formats and connected learning opportunities.
  • Provides information about digital citizenship and online safety.
  • Uses data to tailor instruction on seeking, evaluating, and applying information.
  • Curates authoritative digital instructional materials and content.
  • Models and integrates technologies for innovative, efficient, and creative learning.
  • Promotes critical thinking by connecting learners with information in multiple formats.
  • Includes legal, ethical, and social responsibilities in accessing/creating information; complies with copyright laws and seeks guidance when needed.

Instructional Leadership

The library media specialist contributes to school improvement by serving on decision-making teams, delivering professional learning, and aligning the library program with a shared vision.

  • Collaborates with leaders to develop a shared vision for the library media program.
  • Provides information expertise through presentations at meetings and professional development.
  • Leads and collaborates to design, manage, and implement library media program plans.

Other Key Practices

Includes Effective Practices for Research, Program Planning and Administration, Positive Learning Environment, Collection Development, Professionalism, Communication, and related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Masters Degree in a state-approved Media Specialist program

Experience: Three years of acceptable school experience preferred

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Must be able to perform tasks involving lifting and standing; able to sit or stand for prolonged periods; vision and hearing essential; work environment is usually moderate in noise.

Skills and Abilities

Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and community; knowledge of media program administration, collection development, and curriculum standards; knowledge of information resources; ability to lead and collaborate; student management.

Salary

Salary range per year: $63,263.15 – $93,963.16
