Assistant Professor - Film Studies

Overview The Department of Film Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) invites applications for possibly two tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor of Film Studies to begin August 2026.

The successful candidates will teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in their areas of research as well as some of the department's core courses in film art, film theory, film historiography, and world cinema. The department seeks candidates whose work will expand our existing historical and/or international coverage.

Responsibilities Teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate’s areas of research and contribute to core courses in film art, theory, historiography, and world cinema. Add to the department’s scholarly and teaching mission and contribute to program development as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience

Candidates must possess a PhD in Film Studies or a related discipline.

Applicants should demonstrate potential for teaching excellence and scholarly productivity.

Please note:

ABD applicants will be considered; however, if the PhD is not conferred by August 1, 2026, appointment will be at the rank of Lecturer for the first academic year, and the PhD must be conferred by July 1, 2027 for eligibility of continued employment.

Strong preference will be given to candidates with a PhD in Film Studies at time of application.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit The UNCW Film Studies Department prepares students to participate in a world increasingly shaped by moving pictures, offering courses that build understanding of cinema and its relation to culture, history, technology, and aesthetics. The department combines critical studies with production and has launched integrated MA and MFA programs. It draws on the coastal city of Wilmington and features a vibrant film community connected to festivals, conferences, and screenings.

College/School Information The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA) houses 14 academic departments and offers diverse undergraduate and graduate programs, interdisciplinary minors, and professional advising services.
