Job Description Summary
Under supervision from the Director of Marketing, the Graphic Designer position shall assist with the creation, planning, directing, and coordinating design for print and web projects. This position assists with the maintenance and implementation of brand conformity on the WVSOM website, advertisements, print materials, stationery, etc. in order to meet client expectations. This position will be a full-time, non-classified position with full state benefits and is exempt from FLSA provisions regarding overtime. Minimum base salary is $45,000 commensurate with education and experience. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 8:00-4:30 schedule and may require evening and weekend scheduling. This position has been designated as essential. This means that when WVSOM is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at WVSOM. Minimum Education
Bachelor's
Required Licenses/Certification
Bachelor’s Degree is required in graphic design, marketing or other closely related field. Successful candidate should possess over 2 years of recent and related experience in graphics design. Experience in higher education preferred but not required. A combination of education and recent and related experience may be considered.
Duties and Responsibilities
Serves as a lead designer on critical projects with graphic designers, copywriters and photographers to create successful material as requested by clients. As a member of the overall Marketing Team, the Graphic Designer would assist with the design, pitch, proposal and implementation of creative projects to meet WVSOM’s marketing needs. Projects may include magazine spread designs, logo development, marketing material creation such as brochures and annual reports, advertising campaigns, fundraising campaigns, online graphics, and other related tasks.
Work with internal partners to ensure clients’ needs are met.
Ensure that graphics, logos, advertising and electronic communications adhere to the school’s branding policy and quality.
Produce illustrations, charts and graphics.
Copy-fit press releases and other written content into layouts using excellent typographical skills according to design.
Scan art and photos, electronically manipulating, editing and resizing them according to design and output needs.
Prepare layout according to printing guidelines for digital and print applications.
Prepare mock-ups of design layouts, selecting effective paper and/or other materials and reviews with requester for approval.
Coordinate the use of vendors, photographers, printers and freelancers and work with internal partners to ensure clients’ needs are met.
Review design projects, ensuring that WVSOM policies regarding brand and design are adhered to and educates the client regarding identity standards suggesting areas for improvement.
Work within the department budget to achieve design goals.
Maintain knowledge of creative marketing trends and best practices; Keeps up-to-date technically applying new knowledge and techniques to the job.
Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned or directed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of project management, with an emphasis in marketing projects; extensive knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Bridge and Acrobat. Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel are a plus.
Extensive knowledge of graphic fundamentals, typography, print production and web capabilities and a superior understanding of marketing and advertising principles.
Photography skills are a plus.
Knowledge of Microsoft WORD documents/styles. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint is a plus.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to work collaboratively and take critiques of work professionally.
Ability to work flexible hours when necessary.
Ability to suggest new policies and procedures or recommend changes.
Ability to multitask and collaborate with design staff, both in-house and freelance in order to meet deadlines.
Strong interpersonal skills and work ethic to build trusted, collaborative relationships with internal clients and with vendors: should have good listening skills, project management skills, effective persuasion and presentation skills, and the ability to give creative direction and follow projects to completion.
Experience in higher education preferred.
