Job Description
Farmingdale State College invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor faculty position in the NASAD-accredited Visual Communications: Art & Graphic Design Department. The program seeks an individual with a strong background and an emphasis on advanced graphic design (including basic web and interaction design), typography, and concept development. The successful candidate will join the Visual Communications Department, which encourages a culture in which students learn the value of creativity, imagination, passion, collaboration, and social responsibility.
Responsibilities and Expectations
All faculty members have three workload components: teaching, research and scholarly activity (which includes creative and artistic works), and service. Candidates should have a creative/research agenda that complements their area of academic specialty resulting in peer-reviewed publications, which are necessary for promotion and tenure. The College is also interested in candidates who have a history of, or interest in, pursuing external funding for their research. The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest and high level of competence in teaching. The service component includes student advising and participation on committees. Teaching modalities may include day, evening and weekend classes, including online and hybrid formats.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Terminal degree (MFA, MDes, DDes, or Ph.D.) in Graphic Design or an equivalent terminal degree in a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution or university with an award date by August 30, 2026.
- Ability to teach in at least two areas: Interaction design (UI and UX), 2-dimensional design, color theory, advanced graphic design, typography, digital imaging, and web design.
- Interest and ability to engage in research and creative activity leading to peer-reviewed exhibits, presentations and publications, grants, or other similar outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One or more years of college/university-level teaching and at least one year of professional practice.
- Knowledge of emerging technologies, including applications of artificial intelligence (AI), is strongly desired.
- Ongoing program leading to peer-reviewed/refereed publications or creative works.
Additional Information
This is a full-time 10-month UUP faculty position.
- For the first 10 working days, beginning Friday, October 24, 2025, and ending Sunday, November 2, 2025, applications will be limited to UUP Farmingdale.
- SALARY: $75,000 + $4,000 in downstate location pay = $79,000 Total Compensation. Salary may increase commensurate with qualifications and experience.
- ANTICIPATED START DATE: Fall 2026
