SUMMARY

Provide the expertise and knowledge that support the college curriculum and programs. Establish courses following accepted higher education standards, teach students using a variety of effective methodologies, and provide engagement and support activities that encourage student learning. The role of the Instructional Faculty encompasses teaching and learning, academic advising, professional development, and institutional and community service.

Incumbent will teach a maximum load of (See Faculty Workload Guidelines) contact hours each semester in area(s) of competency and participate as a part‑time instructor in the activities of the department, division and college.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching

  • Demonstrate skill and knowledge in teaching discipline.
  • Use innovative methodologies and techniques to improve quality of instruction.
  • Develop syllabus, submit to department chair.
  • Plan, develop and use variety of teaching methods and materials appropriate for diverse students.
  • Evaluate students and provide timely feedback.
  • Keep accurate student records and submit reports.
  • Review, evaluate and recommend textbooks and learning materials.
  • Teach courses at various times and locations per institutional needs.
  • Use equipment and facilities responsibly; assist with lab maintenance.
  • Demonstrate competence with technology and explore new instructional methods.

Academic Advising

  • Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues and community.
  • Provide access to students through office hours and electronic communication.
  • Advise students regarding academic or program‑specific issues.
  • Present on academic field/program, including career and transfer opportunities.
  • Create and maintain dedicated advising website.
  • Work with Chair on advising activities per College and Department needs.

Professional Development

  • Establish annual objectives with department chair.
  • Keep pace with discipline developments.
  • Learn and apply technologies supporting student learning.
  • Participate in evaluation processes.

Institutional & Community Service

  • Participate in scheduled institutional service activities (opening week, conferences, commencement).
  • Engage in discipline committee or program meetings.
  • Participate in department, college, or system meetings and committees.
  • Assist in college‑related activities such as student activities, recruitment, and special programs.
  • Maintain accreditation standards and planning processes.
  • Review and revise curricula and practices for compliance with standards.
  • Assist articulation of courses with secondary and post‑secondary institutions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher; Master’s with 18 graduate hours preferred in Communication, Creative Writing, Developmental Education, Education, English, History, Journalism, Linguistics, Literature, Professional Writing, Reading, Rhetoric and Composition, Sociology.

Experience: Minimum one (1) year of teaching or tutoring experience related to discipline.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Willing and able to teach day or evening classes at multiple sites across the city.
  • Computer proficiency and use of educational software.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with diverse populations.
  • Good organizational and planning skills.
  • Sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socio‑economic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate students in a learning‑centered environment.
  • Self‑disciplined, able to manage others effectively.
