Overview: The Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs serves as the central headquarters for coordinating all grants, research projects and sponsored program activities. The Office partners with faculty, staff, and administrators to identify, apply for, and obtain resources in support of teaching, scholarship, research, and the university mission and the strategic plan.
Responsibilities
The Technical Writer‑Research/Pre‑Award Assistant will assist the Director with researching, drafting, interpreting guidelines, coordinating, and monitoring the progress of all proposals to be submitted to federal, state, local, and foundation sources. This individual serves as a liaison between the Director and faculty, staff, and administrators and assists them in proposal preparation, processing, submission, and pre‑award administration.
Grant‑Funded Position Notice
This position is funded through Title III‑B, Strengthening HBCUs federal grant, supporting retention initiatives at Southern University at New Orleans. Employment is contingent upon continued federal funding.
Essential Functions

Gather and assemble data from University units and other sources to prepare proposals.
Prepare and assemble proposals for submission to funding agencies.
Generate interdisciplinary or cross‑departmental proposals.
Gather research data associated with proposal/research project subject matter for inclusion in proposal packages.
Develop workshops and seminars.
Compile and maintain databases associated with grants and other office activities.
Research, prepare, and submit quality major research proposals to various funding agencies.
Pre‑Award Activities
Provide technical support and assistance to faculty, staff, and administrators in writing grants.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Familiar with Federal Cost Accounting Standards and Uniform Guidance requirements.
Experience working with faculty in a higher education setting.
Experience preparing project budgets, including salary calculations.
Familiarity with the administrative activities associated with the scientific research process.
Demonstrated experience with federal submission portals such as grants.gov, NSF research.gov, or NIH ASSIST.
Demonstrate excellent people, oral communication, and customer service skills.
Have the aptitude to interact with individuals in a professional, diplomatic and courteous manner.
Have proven ability to handle multiple competing priorities and to adapt to changing priorities, situations, and demands.
Utilize independent judgment, problem solving and decision making to respond to constituents and represent the office in an effective and appropriate manner.
Demonstrate advanced skills for Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Teams, and Outlook.
Work Environment
Office setting. Ability to sit/stand/walk at will; climb stairs; communicate verbally and in writing; use a keyboard; lift or carry up to 10 pounds.
Required Education and Experience
Two to three years of relevant experience in the area.
One to two years of higher education experience.
