Tool Designer - Deep Draw & Transfer Tooling
About This Role
We are seeking a skilled Tool Designer to join our engineering team and provide technical expertise in metal forming techniques, specifically Deep Draw and Transfer tooling. This role is essential to meeting customer quotation requests, developing prototype samples, and managing the complete tooling design and build process. You'll work collaboratively across departments while leading tool planning for new product development and improvement programs.
What You'll Do
Design & Development
Lead tool planning for new product development and improvement programs through cross-functional collaboration
Create detailed tooling drawings using SolidWorks and maintain accurate records in our ERP system
Complete tool design calculations including draw reductions, clearances, punch and die radii, and component sizing
Design machine parts and auxiliary tooling systems for existing presses, including transfer slides, cross motion devices, and sensor applications
Technical Analysis & Optimization
Determine the most effective press configurations for each part based on physical requirements (diameter, depth, tonnage, material specifications) and economic factors (press speed, setup time, efficiency)
Establish preferred practices and operating ranges for tooling standards, including tool steel selection, coatings, and surface finishes
Troubleshoot tooling issues and determine solutions for mechanical problems, material challenges, and station-to-station relationships
Project Management & Collaboration
Coordinate tooling build, development, and launch processes from concept to production
Conduct design reviews with Tool Room, R&D, and Manufacturing teams
Process tool and kit change requests while ensuring compliance with design standards
Purchase components including bushings, gears, springs, and specialized tooling elements
Documentation & Process Improvement
Create and maintain comprehensive part drawings, gage drawings, and machine component documentation
Update process logbooks and drawing revisions to reflect tooling modifications
Enter tool numbers and build product structures within our ERP system
What We're Looking For
Education:
Associate Degree in Mechanical Design with emphasis in tool & die design, OR
Equivalent specialized education and coursework in engineering and tool design
Experience:
2-4 years of experience in engineering or tool design roles
Hands-on experience with Deep Draw and Transfer tooling preferred
