Overview The J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte is seeking a Data Science Librarian to provide research support to students and faculty to help them achieve their academic and professional goals. The Data Science Librarian will serve as a major point of contact for students, faculty, and researchers across the University in finding and utilizing data. This position will serve as liaison to the newly launched School of Data Science, as well as the College of Computing and Informatics and the Geography department. The Data Science Librarian will help faculty, students, and researchers have a better understanding of how to apply artificial intelligence tools to improve their work with data. Additionally, they will collaborate with a team of subject librarians. They will design and teach instructional sessions, create online research guides, and assist with collection development for assigned academic programs. They will identify projects of interest and growth areas to support the library’s mission as a recently designated R1-status university. Responsibilities Develop and provide instruction on data literacy and data visualization to assigned subject areas and the campus community Provide support for locating statistics, demographic, and census information for students, faculty, and researchers across the University Actively engage with assigned liaison areas Teach research instruction sessions for assigned subjects and academic programs Develop instructional and informational aids for students, faculty, and community patrons Manage and develop collections for assigned subjects and expend budget allocations for acquisition of library materials according to established deadlines Provide research and reference support for assigned subjects to students, faculty, and community patrons Conduct collection evaluations for all proposed new courses and curriculum changes in assigned departments Engage in professional service and scholarly contributions; participate in committees and faculty governance in the library and on campus Communicate effectively with individuals of varied backgrounds Participate in the provision of in-person and virtual research services Perform other duties as assigned Qualifications Required Experience Completion of a master’s degree in library and information science from an American Library Association-accredited program by the time of application. Graduation with a master’s degree in a specialized area directly relevant to the position may be an acceptable substitute in certain situations if approved by the Dean. The selected candidate will be subject to a criminal background check and verification of academic credentials. Hiring is subject to budget availability. Preferred Education, Skills and Experience Significant coursework or experience working with data Proficiency with at least one application or programming language for preparing, analyzing, or visualizing data (e.g., R or Python) Experience with statistical software such as Stata, SAS, or SPSS Instruction or liaison experience in an academic research library Knowledge of the research needs of students and faculty at a Doctoral Intensive Institution Excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to work collaboratively and independently Ability to work with diverse groups and foster an environment of mutual respect Knowledge of relevant professional and technological issues in assigned areas Ability to adapt to organizational change and pursue public service excellence Intellectual curiosity and adaptability Salary and Application Materials Salary range for this position: $72,000 – $76,000 Application materials required: Resume/CV; names, titles, company/institution, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of at least 3 professional references (at least 2 supervisors).
