LIBRARY ASSISTANT - CIRCULATION - FOX AND ROBBINS LIBRARIES
7 Hours Per Week
Hourly Range: $20.81 - $27.85
Definition
Performs administrative, direct service, and other support duties pertaining to the circulation activities of the Fox Branch and the Robbins Library; all other related work, as required.
Supervision
Works under the direct supervision of the Branch Librarian while working at the Fox Branch and the Head of Circulation/Assistant Circulation Manager while working at the Robbins Library, in accordance with established methods and procedures.
Most work is planned and arranged by the supervisor; assignments are completed according to established procedures and departmental policies and standards.
Work Environment
Work is performed under typical library conditions; the workload is subject to seasonal and other fluctuations. The regular library working schedule is every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. September through June at Fox Branch and every Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. July and August at the Robbins Library.
The employee operates standard office and library equipment.
The employee has ongoing contact with library patrons, town employees and school personnel. Contact is in person, as well as by telephone, and in writing.
The employee has access to confidential patron records.
Errors are easily detected and corrected, but could result in delay of service, monetary loss or legal repercussions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Attends the circulation desk, using the automated circulation system to check out, renew and check in library materials and register new patrons; collects and processes library bills and book sale proceeds; processes and sorts returned materials.
Responds to requests for information pertaining to basic library procedures; receives orders to reserve books and schedules museum pass reservations, in person and on the telephone; answers the telephone, transfers calls, takes and relays messages.
Maintains patron registration file; performs data entry for complete borrower information and maintains paper files.
Processes reserve book requests; notifies patrons and prepares holds for patron pick up; processes network transfer requests on a daily basis for items requested by other libraries in the Minuteman Library Network; prints send-item list; searches shelves; routes items to appropriate library; edits hold of missing items to request from another library.
Performs required searches for overdue and missing materials; records and deposits lost material payment.
Processes newspapers for circulation; performs various support duties; checks records and prepares basic statistics; troubleshoots equipment and assists with minor maintenance.
Maintains new books collection by transferring books to regular collection, as needed.
Performs additional tasks as required, including sorting holds, organizing materials for homebound delivery, and other duties as assigned.
Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
High school diploma; one year of office or library experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Knowledge of library policies and procedures.
Ability to interact tactfully and appropriately with library patrons.
Office and computer skills. Customer service skills. Verbal communication skills.
Physical Requirements
Minimal physical effort is required to perform most duties; some duties require moderate effort. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, use hands to operate equipment, climb, stoop, reach with hands and arms and move and push equipment.
