Summary

The VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System is seeking a Staff Physician (Cardiology) for their Harlingen, Texas location. This OPEN & CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT will remain open until April 08 - 2026 or until positions are filled. Eligible applications will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as?needed basis until positions are filled.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physician(s) who met the qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are considered to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship: Non?citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Education: Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • License/Registration: Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Residency Note: Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee?basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged. They will have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.

  • Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting 1544 pounds; Light lifting under 15 pounds; Light carrying under 15 pounds; Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (6 hours); Standing (6 hours); Both legs required; Both eyes required; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing (aid may be permitted); Mental/emotional stability; Ability to perform privileges; Independently performs physical exams as appropriate.

Duties
  • Staff cardiologists shall be responsible for outpatient care, graduate and undergraduate medical education, and scientific research as appropriate.
  • Responsible for all aspects of Cardiology Care.
  • Provides or assists residents and/or nurse practitioners in the evaluation and treatment of cardiology patients.
  • Evaluates the patient to assess changes in the physical and mental status.
  • Includes progress notes written in the patients chart, including concurrence with notes written by residents and attending notes as appropriate.
  • Performs inpatient cardiology consultation reviews and outpatient cardiology evaluations and treatment.
  • Participates in various hospital committees, departmental and hospital in?service programs, and education programs of the department and hospital.
  • Also involved in continuous quality improvement through peer review process.
  • May be eligible for Recruitment/Relocation Incentive (Sign?on Bonus) and Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). Ensure eligibility as per VHA policy and submit EDRP application within four months of appointment.
