Houston Chronicle Visuals Internship

The Houston Chronicle is looking for motivated student journalists who plan to pursue a career in visual journalism for its summer 2026 internship program.

We are seeking a creative and ambitious visuals intern to join our newsroom team. The intern will help produce compelling still photography and short-form video for the Chronicle's website and social platforms, including TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts. They will have the opportunity to collaborate across the newsroom to tell visually driven stories that capture Houston's people, culture and breaking news moments.

Our summer interns are integral members of the newsroom, producing work that reaches hundreds of thousands of readers and viewers. Past interns have gone on to full-time roles at the Chronicle as reporters, producers and editors across our newsroom and audience teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Photograph and film daily and enterprise assignments in coordination with editors and reporters
  • Pitch, shoot, edit and publish short-form videos optimized for social platforms
  • Identify visual storytelling opportunities across beats and social trends
  • Edit and caption photos and videos with attention to accuracy, tone and engagement
  • Collaborate with reporters, editors and the audience team to translate Chronicle journalism into visual stories
  • Contribute ideas for visual storytelling that strengthen the Chronicle's reach and connection with audiences

Requirements:

  • Juniors, seniors or recent graduates with prior experience at a college news publication or professional news organization.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a car.
  • Must obtain housing in Houston and work in the Chronicle's office at least 3 days a week.

Internship Details:

  • 40 hours a week for 10 weeks, from early June to early August. Interns will be paid $15 an hour.
  • Interns will work Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend coverage based on news demands.
  • The recruiting committee will assign all interns a mentor from the newsroom based on their interests.
