Position Summary
Shipboard Electrician – a shipboard motor and motor controller support electrician responsible for maintaining and providing technical support for shipboard electrical systems and components at Newport News Shipbuilding.

Clearance Requirement
US citizen with the ability to obtain or maintain a DoD Secret security clearance (DBIDS required).
Responsibilities
- Provide technical guidance and instruction to ships’ force to enhance self‑sustainability and diagnose problems.
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on shipboard electrical systems and equipment.
- Conduct ship‑checks to determine scope of work in accordance with NAVSEA drawings and technical references.
- Assist in minor repairs, adjustments, and testing on shipboard motor and motor controllers.
- Use shop and shipboard equipment such as multi‑meters, clamp meters, electrical circuit tracers, meggers, gauge manifolds, hydrostatic test rigs, and hand tools.
Qualifications
- High School/GED required.
- At least 5 years’ experience as a shipboard electrician, preferably in the U.S. Navy.
- Experience with Joint Fleet Maintenance Manual (JFMM), Naval Ships Technical Manual (NSTM), military standards, test memos, test standards, drawings, and technical manuals.
- Completion of Maritime Industry OSHA Course 7615 (29 CFR 1915).
Physical Demands & Expectations
- Speak, read, hear, and write clearly, with or without assistance.
- Use phone and computer systems, copier, fax, and other office equipment.
- Walk, reach, sit, and concentrate in environments with occasional noise.
- Navigate narrow and restricted passageways, climb steep ladders or stairways aboard ship.
- Lift and move objects up to 50 lbs.
- See details at close range (within a few feet).
- Noise conditions range from very quiet to loud.
