The Senior Radio Communications Systems Engineer serves as a technical lead, driving engineering projects and delivering expert-level support for the County’s radio communications infrastructure. This position works within the Sheriff's Office's Wireless Services Division and blends engineering, analytical, and project management into the County's radio communications systems. Responsibilities include analyzing, coordinating, designing, and maintaining telecommunications systems, equipment, and associated circuits for the transmission, reception, and display of voice, data, and other information on wireless communication systems. The role also collaborates with personnel within the Wireless Services Division to execute system upgrades, implement new technologies, and configure engineered solutions with both existing and new communications systems.
The Sheriff's Wireless Services Division operates and maintains the San Diego County – Imperial County Regional Communications System (RCS) Public safety P25 radio network, which provides public safety radio communications service to more than 20,000 subscriber radios across both counties. The Office is committed to improving and integrating new technologies to support and enhance wireless communications systems.
Qualifying Education and Experience
- Possession of a bachelor's degree from a U.S. accredited college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency, in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, telecommunications engineering, or a closely related engineering field AND
- Five (5) years of full-time professional level engineering experience in the field of electronic communications which must have included working with large, multi-site radio and/or microwave networks; OR
- An equivalent combination of qualifying education and experience listed above, totaling nine (9) years.
NOTE: Professional level experience performing engineering and analytical work on land mobile radios, trunked radio systems, microwave transport networks, and IP-based communications systems is highly desirable. A thorough knowledge of computer programs used to perform engineering design and drawing, such as AutoCad, is highly desirable.
