Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, fabricate, and support testing of new and innovative soft‑goods articles for advanced exploration space suits and ancillary support items.

Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and designers to understand requirements and advise on system and hardware integration.

Maintain a high level of technical proficiency and attention to craftsmanship and presentation.

Clearly present design concepts and considerations to stakeholders.

Take ownership of design tasks, showing initiative to complete projects.

Perform machine maintenance, repair, and custom modifications for unique operations.

Create patterns and develop mock‑ups to verify fit and function of soft‑good articles.

Interpret fabrication drawings, assemble sewn products, and document new design work.

Seek out new manufacturing techniques and innovative materials.

Keep lab spaces clean, organized, and well maintained.

Travel occasionally to other NASA centers or contractors to perform soft‑goods fabrication and installation.

Lift and transport materials and equipment; work in confined spaces, climb steps, and use ladders.

Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

High school diploma and 5 years of experience, or a B.S. in Engineering Technology or related field.

Experience designing and fabricating space‑suit soft‑goods for flight applications.

Experience with space‑suit soft‑goods flight material replacement tasks.

Experience in a soft‑goods development lab with emphasis on design and fabrication.

Demonstrated ability to devise solutions to complex design challenges independently and with input from experts.

Expertise in hands‑on fabrication techniques and sewing processes (sewing machines, laser cutters, fabric welders, 3D printers, bandsaws, drills, hand tools).

Success working with a cross‑disciplinary team.

Proficiency in CAD programs and related software (Adobe and Office Suites).

Preferences

BA, BFA, or B.S. in Industrial Design, Apparel Design, or equivalent.

Experience in aerospace product design processes and fabrication drawings.

Experience fabricating prototype soft‑good products.

Familiarity with soft‑goods article and textile testing procedures.

Experience with Adobe Illustrator, AutoCAD, and Rhino.

Ancillary experience in manufacturing, testing, or design processes beneficial to space‑suit technology.

Understanding of advanced textile materials and properties.

Familiarity with NASA/JSC Soft‑goods design, development, and JETS Engineering Life Cycle processes.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements Generally an office environment with occasional inside or outside work depending on tasks.

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). Lifting and carrying up to 25 lb. may be required (5% of time).

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.) is used.

Attendance & Schedule Regular attendance is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust to peak periods and surge requirements is required.
