Job Overview
The City of Tempe is hiring a
911 Communications Dispatcher
to receive, evaluate, and dispatch emergency and non‑emergency calls using the Enhanced 911 communications system. The position is classified as safety sensitive and requires shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Base Pay Range $110.00/hr - $110.00/hr
Hourly Range: $28.17 - $41.54
Key Responsibilities
Responds to emergency service calls, radio transmissions, and voice instructions for police, fire, or other emergency services.
Determines the type and number of units required for dispatch based on call details and hazard assessment.
Transcribes and documents caller descriptions, providing situational awareness to responders.
Utilizes crisis communication strategies to calm callers experiencing emergencies.
Tracks and maintains the status of in‑field units.
Answers non‑emergency calls, providing assistance related to civil, criminal, and traffic laws and directing calls appropriately.
Enters, updates, and processes calls in the computer‑aided dispatch system accurately and efficiently.
Documents and manages information from crime and intelligence databases (wanted persons, stolen property, etc.) to aid in response.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in customer service, call center, clerical, or related role.
Typing speed of at least 40 net words per minute (NWPM). Verifiable via assessment.
A minimum of 2,080 hours per year for full‑time experience. Part‑time experience may be counted proportionately.
High school diploma or GED required. College credit may substitute for experience on a value‑by‑value basis.
Certification: Terminal Operator Certification granted by Arizona Department of Public Safety within one week of hire.
Additional Requirements
Pass post‑offer/pre‑employment drug screen.
Undergo police background check, polygraph examination, and psychological evaluation.
Prohibited from marijuana use (medical or recreational) for safety‑sensitive classification.
