Position Summary Manhattan University’s Communication, Sound, and Media Arts Department seeks a one-year, full-time appointment at the Visiting Assistant Professor level to join and participate in the building of our dynamic and newly combined department, which presents areas of study in journalism, media production, graphic design, audio recording, sound design, animation, 3D design, and game design. We are looking for someone who will help guide our concentration in journalism, but who is also a communication generalist. In addition, we seek someone committed to the balance of theory and practice, given our commitment to the liberal arts tradition and the University’s Lasallian tradition, and to take advantage of our location in the northernmost borough of New York City. By theory, we mean theory that connects our discipline to the liberal arts, to ethical practice in the media/mass media industry, to the use of media by citizens and consumers, to the media’s impact on individuals and society/culture, and to the role of journalism within a democratic political system. By practice, we mean someone with either or both a record of professional experience and a willingness to work and network with the industry in Manhattan to create internship and career opportunities for our students. This is an in person on campus non - remote position. Responsibilities Advise students in basic courses as well as courses in journalism Advisor to our student newspaper Teach core courses in Communication, including ethics in mass communication, media theory and research, and our capstone senior thesis course Develop and maintain course materials, including syllabi, assignments, and assessments in alignment with program objectives Hold regular office hours to provide academic support and mentorship to students Evaluate student performance and provide feedback Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment Qualifications Ph.D. in journalism or communication required. Candidates who have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. (ABD) may be considered, provided the degree is conferred by the start date of employment.
