LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST – Elementary
Salary Schedule: Certified Teacher Schedule

Position Summary
A school library media specialist is in charge of maintaining library resources for a school, including fiction and non-fiction books, magazines, educational software, DVDs, and related materials. The media specialist advises users on equipment for lessons, presentations, and events.
Qualification Requirements
Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
Master’s Degree
Appropriate Oklahoma Teaching Certification
A minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching preferred
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operate and supervise the media center assigned.
Evaluate, select, and requisition new media center materials.
Assist teachers in selecting books and instructional materials, and make media center materials available to supplement instruction.
Maintain a comprehensive automated system for cataloging all media center materials and instruct teachers and students on its use.
Present and discuss materials with a class on the teacher’s invitation.
Counsel and give reading guidance to students with special reading problems or unusual intellectual interests.
Arrange frequently‑changing book‑related displays and exhibits of interest to patrons.
Supervise media center aides in performing their duties.
Weed obsolete and worn materials from the collections.
Perform additional duties assigned by the immediate supervisor or parent agency.
Skills
Language and Grammar: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to compose grammatically correct correspondence and memos.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and handle concrete variables where limited standardization exists; ability to interpret instructions in various formats.
Physical Demands
Requires frequent use of hands and arms to handle objects, tools, or controls. Must stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl regularly. Occasionally sits. May lift or move up to 100 pounds frequently; may lift or move more than 100 pounds occasionally; may lift or move up to 50 pounds frequently.
Work Environment
Exposure to fumes or airborne particles; work near moving mechanical parts, extreme cold, extreme heat, electrical shock risk, and vibration. Noise level ranges from somewhat loud to extremely loud. Adverse weather and high, precarious places are common.
Supervisory Responsibilities
May supervise a varying number of employees in direction, coordination, and task completion as assigned.
