Overview
The New Berlin Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and dynamic Youth Services Librarian. The Youth Services Librarian will be responsible for developing and implementing services, programming, and outreach for children and their caregivers, and helping to curate an up-to-date and balanced collection of materials. The ideal candidate for this position will be able to work both independently and collaboratively with our librarian team. Primary Functions
Primary Functions: The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for providing excellent customer service to library patrons, assisting children and their caregivers in locating and evaluating information, planning and conducting engaging youth programs, promoting youth services to the community, managing assigned library collections, serving on assigned committees, helping to create a vibrant and welcoming youth area, and administering other library services as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Knowledge of early literacy practices, children’s literature, and storytelling techniques, and the ability to use this knowledge to create dynamic storytimes.
- Develop and implement age-appropriate programs and outreach offerings.
- Perform reference assistance, bibliographic instruction, reader’s advisory and patron assistance services.
- Recommend materials for purchase in assigned areas, catalog and classify library materials, weed collection, and manage inventories in assigned areas.
- Assist in the library’s web administrative functions, create content, and market across social media platforms.
- Working knowledge of the Library’s digital content on a variety of platforms and the ability to assist patrons on a variety of devices.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and a Master of Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited library school. Preference given to candidates with 1-2 years of experience serving youth in a professional library environment, along with the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Ability to understand library principles, procedures, technology, goals, and philosophy of service, and apply them to library operations.
- Ability to use knowledge and training to serve the needs of the library productively, in addition to a willingness to commit to professional growth through continuing education.
- Ability to meet, communicate and work with patrons and co-workers effectively.
- Ability to comprehend and follow instructions, both verbally and in written form, in a timely manner.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Ability to gather statistics, analyze information, write reports and grants.
- Good oral, written and computer skills including a proficiency with Microsoft Office products; must be able to assist patrons with computer-related questions.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and special events as required.

- HEALTH INSURANCE: Employees have the option of enrolling in the health insurance plan offered by the City. The effective date of coverage is the employee's start date.

- Health Insurance (examples): Single $128.12, Family $333.63 monthly premiums, with totals shown as indicated.
- HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNT: The city's health insurance is an HSA plan. The city contributes to the employee's Health Savings Account with a monthly total of $125 for those on an individual plan and $250 for those on a family plan. For 2025, the City will contribute a one-time contribution for those on the health insurance plan effective February 1st of $100 for single and $200 for family.
- HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ACCOUNT: The City has a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) in place for staff participating in the health plan. This reimburses staff for incurred eligible medical and pharmacy expenses over a set limit.
- HERO Program: The City offers a voluntary spousal health reimbursement program for employees who are currently enrolled in another group health plan.
- DENTAL INSURANCE: Employees have the option of enrolling in Delta Dental with employee premiums paid entirely by the City. Employees can choose to purchase coverage for Spouse or Dependents at the listed rates. Dental coverage would be effective the 1st of the month following the date of hire.

- VISION INSURANCE: Employees have the option of enrolling in Delta Vision/Eyemed Network with employee premiums paid entirely by the City. Coverage details similar to dental.
- LIMITED PURPOSE FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS: This plan allows pre-tax payroll contributions to reimburse qualified out-of-pocket dental and vision expenses. 2025 contribution limit is $3,300. Coverage begins on the first of the month following the date of hire.
- DEPENDENT CARE FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS: Allows pre-taxed payroll contributions for dependent care expenses. IRS limit up to $5,000 per year. Coverage begins on the first of the month following the date of hire.
- LIFE INSURANCE: Life Insurance is provided to each City employee at no cost. Coverage is one times the annual salary rounded up to the next thousand with double indemnity for accidental death. Coverage starts the first of the month following the date of hire.
- SUPPLEMENTAL LIFE INSURANCE: You may elect dependent life insurance for spouse and/or eligible dependents. Premiums paid by employee. Coverage begins the first of the month following the date of hire.
- Voluntary Worksite Benefits: City offers voluntary benefits for Accident Insurance and Critical Illness Insurance. Benefits are alacarte; payroll deductions are after-tax.
- WISCONSIN RETIREMENT SYSTEM (WRS): Automatic enrollment for full-time employees. Details on employer/employee contributions and vesting are provided.
- DEFERRED COMPENSATION (Section 457 Plan): Employee-funded, voluntary, pre-tax or Roth basis.
- FREE RECPASS: Complimentary Gym and Track RecPASS for unlimited access to rec programs.
