Associate Director, Communications

to join our team. As an

Associate Director, Communications , is responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies and plans. They oversee, create, and disseminate communications materials about organizational issues and news. They generate strategic messaging for the organization’s lines of business.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Key duties include managing strategies, outreach efforts, and content creation that enhance the UWM brand and aid in fostering connection and engagement of employees, current/prospective donors, and volunteers. This position will drive strong communications engagement from various stakeholders with the goals of expanding share of voice and optimizing quality of coverage.

Collaborates with AVP to ensure and maintain a consistent brand message

Works with AVP to develop crisis communication plans, coordinates with internal teams, and provides timely and transparent communication to stakeholders. Review and approve all written press releases, media alerts, and submissions to the press.

Maintain up-to-date media and contact list (beat reporters, news stations, outlets)

Write and assist with copy for the executive leadership team and the Office of the President and CEO

Pitch relevant story ideas/initiatives to local and media

Source and submit applications for awards and panels to help amplify brand awareness for the organization and the CEO

Works closely with AVP and external vendors to support media communications and development of public relations materials, including press releases, scripts, talking points, OpEds, etc.

Works with the team to develop visuals to support advertising, publicity, and marketing opportunities; leverages current practices and technologies to generate engagement and expand online media presence; stays abreast of communications trends that can be implemented to elevate the brand, pillar work, events, and initiatives.

Lead on designated line of business, campaign, or initiative – communications overall needs to the M&C team

Attends events to support a variety of functions, including staffing photographers/videographers, facilitating media, executive leadership, social media coverage, show calling, and overall event functions. Develops other team members to assist with the coordination of event coverage.

Contributes to regular insight reports, including monthly board and scorecard updates, quarterly reports, and year-end final reports as needed

Leads social media strategy; works closely with Social Media/Digital Marketing Manager and external partners to ensure proper promotion of UWM events and initiatives, along with telling the brand story

Repurposes content to produce promotional materials featuring UWM’s brand; builds content library to be used across various platforms, including, but not limited to, website, e-newsletter, social media channels, as well as local media

Lead on reviewing and approving content, as well as supervising team members.

Requirements:

Education Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Communication/Public Relations /Journalism/Marketing; advanced degree or certifications desirable, or equivalent experience.

Experience Requirements:

Five to seven years’ experience in Publicity/Writing/Marketing assignments.

Technology Requirements:

Microsoft Office Suite, advanced social media sites, project management software (such as Asana), social media management platforms (such as Sprout Social); working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and photography/video equipment (). Knowledge of modern web browsers.

Other Essential Knowledge/Skills:

AP style grammar; excellent oral and written communication skills; effective organization and time management skills. Knowledge of social media is a must. Some knowledge of photography and/or videography and video editing is a plus. Ability to work well with a diverse population. Strong customer service skills required, as well as the ability to engage in public speaking. Bilingual English/Spanish .
