Center on Budget and Policy Priorities
Assistant, Communications
Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Washington, District of Columbia, us, 20022
The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is a nonpartisan research and policy institute that advances federal and state policies to help build a nation where everyone - regardless of income, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ZIP code, immigration status, or disability status - has the resources they need to thrive and share in the nation's prosperity.
CBPP combines rigorous research and analysis, strategic communications, and effective advocacy to shape debates, affect policy, and inform implementation both nationally and in states. It works closely with a broad set of national, state, and community organizations to design and advance policies that promote economic justice; improve health; broaden opportunity in areas like housing, health care, employment, and education; and lower barriers for people of color and others in communities that continue to face systemic barriers to opportunity. CBPP promotes policies that will build a more equitable nation and fair tax policies that can support these gains over the long term. CBPP also shows the harmful impacts of policies and proposals that would deepen poverty, widen disparities, and worsen health outcomes. CBPP is known for its unique capacity to blend rigorous, timely analysis with effective communications that enable policymakers and the media to make use of its work.
CBPP's Communications team coordinates the release and promotion of the organization's analysis to expand the reach of our work and help shape key policy debates. The Communications team works with leading journalists and a diverse range of reporters across the country to inform the public conversation at the state and federal levels.
CBPP seeks an Assistant of Communications to contribute to the development of media strategy and tactics to support the organization's policy goals. The Assistant of Communications role offers an opportunity for a talented communications professional to work in an environment where strategies and timelines are driven by the news cycle and the debates in Congress, the Administration, and state capitols across the country. The Center is looking for someone who can use innovative communications strategies to shape the news and public debate and advance policies that build opportunity, promote equity, and reduce poverty. The ideal candidate is extremely organized, detail-oriented, energetic, and a self-starter with an interest in proactively promoting CBPP's policy work to press on a daily basis.
Responsibilities:
Support the release of new CBPP content - including reports, statements, blog posts, tweet threads, and more - by creating media outreach plans, materials, and conducting outreach to press. Build and maintain relationships with press contacts by fielding media inquiries, drafting and deploying pitches, and identifying and cultivating relationships with journalists who cover CBPP's policy issues. Assist with the development of messaging on CBPP's policy issues and media training of the organization's policy experts. Track news coverage of the issues upon which the organization works; follow breaking news, policy, and political developments; and have familiarity with policy and the legislative process to ensure work with the media advances CBPP's strategic goals. Collaborate with communications team members to bring an equity lens to all facets of the work, including public products as well as the processes we use to do our work. Identify opportunities to bring strategic and innovative ideas and best practices in media relations to the team's processes and work. Work with experts and the media to expand the reach of CBPP's communications on key state policy developments. Provide administrative support for key projects, such as developing agendas, scheduling, and facilitating meetings. Perform other job-related duties within the role's scope as assigned to support the team's goals. Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree; minimum 0-2 years of professional experience in communications or a related field. Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people. Ability to multi-task, set priorities, meet deadlines, and ask for help or reconsideration of priorities when needed. Ability to communicate about federal and state policies that affect people with low-incomes and diverse communities and have implications for racial justice. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to be a persuasive communicator with strong interpersonal and organizational project skills. An understanding of racial equity and structural racism and a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion through the CBPP's communications work.
