The Design Consultant works closely with the customer in the design center or studio, remotely, online or in the customer’s home to create individualized design solutions to sell Ethan Allen products and services. The designs include space planning, fabric coordination, product selection, and overall project design. Successful execution is evidenced by developing individualized designs and achieving sales goals in a flexible, relationship‑based selling environment. Some projects may require a team or partnership‑based approach. Design Consultants are measured on performance categories (teamwork, customer service, communication skills, decision making, project development, presentation, and technical skills) and benchmarks (Minimum Monthly Sales, Home Calls, Accent Sales, Softgood Sales, Be‑Backs, PI, Close Ratio, and Ethan Allen Trade Program) that contribute to the success of the Design Center as well as the Consultant’s own success. Consultants must be skilled in the use of social media such as blogs, micro‑blogs, online forums, content sharing websites, and other digital channels established for online interaction and connect to promote Ethan Allen’s brand as outlined in the Social Media Policy. Compensation is incentive‑based with total earnings determined by commissions earned, and consultants are expected to meet or exceed Minimum Monthly Sales and other benchmarks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Create design solutions that align with the customer’s preferences and budget.

Sell Ethan Allen products and services.

Represent the Ethan Allen brand in all customer interactions and professionally greet customers, establish rapport, and obtain appointments for in‑home consultations.

Make regular home calls to evaluate the customer’s needs and provide a complete individualized design solution that results in closed sales.

Utilize grassroots marketing and various social media platforms to develop and grow the business.

Educate customers about the complimentary design service offered, tailoring the level of service to customer desire.

Stay current on design and color trends to create fashionable solutions.

Coordinate with the team to provide exceptional service before, during, and after the sale, keeping customers informed of order status.

Participate in all corporate‑sponsored marketing and training programs.

Educate customers on all available Ethan Allen finance options.

Contribute to the development and ongoing upkeep of the design center’s portfolio.

Utilize corporate systems and technology to maximize efficiency in designing projects, creating presentations, and providing professional service.

Enter orders using the retail point‑of‑sale system.

Maintain a neat and orderly design center projection.

Develop business and grassroots marketing plans with the Design Center Leader and build relationships with prospective and current clients through technology such as 3‑D Room Planner, CRM, Live Chat, etc.

Use appropriate social media (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) to heighten personal and Ethan Allen’s presence and to build a network in the market.

Perform other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a design‑related field with a minimum of one year of practical interior design experience.

Broad knowledge of interior design and effective sales techniques.Working knowledge of online sales and design tools.

Excellent listening, oral, and written communication skills.

General understanding of how to use social media and grassroots marketing to develop a book of business; proven experience preferred.

Valid driver’s license (unless an acceptable alternative transportation arrangement is in place).

Intermediate competency using digital floor‑planning technology (3‑D applications a plus).

Experience with interactive technology to view design concepts such as augmented reality and virtual reality.

Willingness and capacity to learn new technologies.

Compensation The annual salary range is $60,500–$150,000, depending on experience. In addition to base salary, a monthly commission is paid based on written sales for the month.
