Digital Court Reporter

A Digital Court Reporter is required to be present in depositions in which an attorney desires to have the deponent’s testimony captured via audio or video. They set up the audio and video equipment, operate the digital recording system, take down notes during proceedings, and create a log of speaker identification and keywords that serve as a general outline of the digital recording.

Responsibilities

  • Set up audio/video equipment quickly and professionally in new and changing environments.
  • Accurately position and monitor microphone placement for ideal audio capture.
  • Continuously mix multiple audio tracks for proper level and monitor interference on a portable audio interface.
  • Set white balance and exposure appropriately in various environments.
  • Establish and monitor video framing consistent with legal videography norms.
  • Assist clients with audio, video, and technology issues both in‑person and remotely.
  • Maintain a high-level understanding of departmental policy, the legal field, and audio/video technology.
  • Track and log key legal events during proceedings, noting relevant spellings, exhibits, and objections.
  • Swear in deponents and faithfully capture their spoken testimony under oath during depositions and other legal proceedings.
  • Maintain a calm, neutral, and professional demeanor before, during, and after various legal proceedings.

Martinsville, VA

8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Compensation

$22.00 – $24.00 per hour

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have some experience or knowledge of the legal industry, a 2- or 4-year degree (preferred), and be comfortable with A/V technologies and digital recording. They must have a professional appearance, be able to interact face‑to‑face with professional clients, adapt to unexpected circumstances and variable schedules, and be able to work after hours. Reliable transportation is required, and the candidate must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lb. Reasonable accommodations may be made for persons with disabilities.
