Title: Designer

Functional Area: Product Design & Engineering

Reports to: Mechanical Engineering Manager

Purpose

The Product Design & Engineering team helps drive growth by introducing strategic new product platforms, and customer customized solutions. This role will use creativity and collaboration to generate technology and product concepts & designs along with the associated controlling documentation for intuitive, aesthetic, innovative, cost-effective and manufacturable designs. The scope of the role includes both new product and sustaining engineering efforts as well as support for our sales & marketing teams.

Accountability

  • Create and maintain all forms of product documentation with guidance: 3D models for components & assemblies, 2D component & manufacturing assembly drawings, Technical product datasheets, and Customer Instruction manuals
  • Create and revise concepts & designs based on market and customer specific requirements with guidance, reverse engineer customer equipment or commercially available components
  • Perform tolerance analysis and includes accurate standard and geometric tolerances on all detail drawings; Assist others with these tasks as needed
  • Ensure compliance with required design safety factors, tolerances, and specifications
  • Ability to prioritize, plan, document, and manage projects to meet multiple project commitments: Performance, Cost, and Schedule
  • Work directly with manufacturing and/or suppliers to proactively design for manufacturability and assembly (DFX)
  • Select commercially available components for use in products
  • Select materials for use in product components
  • Obtain and verify product packaging samples and packaging documentation
  • Maintain consistent and standardized product design history/project files in proper folders and use the Product Design & Engineering checklists to ensure all appropriate tasks are complete at time of release
  • Build and verify prototypes and pilot production assemblies
  • Create test plans when appropriate to support project requirements and validation activities
  • Working knowledge of additive manufacturing (3D printing) technologies and their capabilities
  • Inspect incoming component parts for accuracy and quality; Assist and direct others with this task as needed
  • Execute engineering change orders in a timely manner with minimal supervision
  • Participate in cross‑functional teams for assigned projects
  • Participate in or lead cross‑functional design reviews
  • Effectively communicate with engineers, designers, technicians, manufacturing engineers, and suppliers to meet project commitments
  • Learn & expand personal knowledge of the industry, competitors, and customers

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate of Science degree in Drafting, Product Design, Engineering Technology, or equivalent
  • At least two (2) years of experience in Mechanical Design in a manufacturing environment
  • Skilled in parametric design & surface modeling—preferably SolidWorks
  • Knowledge of DFX for precision manufacturing materials & processes including sheet metal, castings, injection molding, extruding, machining, paint & powder coating, PCBA, and assembly
  • Working knowledge of additive manufacturing
  • Proficiency in mechanical design drafting practices, including full compliance with ASME Standard Y14.5‑2009 and relevant GD&T standards
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft 365 (Teams, Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Proficiency in performing some basic mechanical engineering calculations
  • Demonstrated ability to select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Successful launch of two (2) or more products
  • Design thinking
  • Rendering experience—preferably SolidWorks Visualize or KeyShot
  • Design for electrical component integration
  • Experience with CAD vault systems for managing part libraries, revisions, and design data integrity

Physical Demands

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photo copiers, etc.
  • Combination of general office & engineering lab / shop environment
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lb
  • Employee will be regularly required to perform coordinated movements of hands & fingers for data entry, CAD modeling, and product or prototype assembly, and product testing
  • May require local travel to other company facilities, suppliers, and customers
  • Long‑distance travel as needed—not to exceed 5%
