The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Librarian, Reference to join the Museum Archives, Library, and Research Collections (ALRC) team. This position provides reference and reader services to Museum staff, researchers, and the public, supporting access to MoMA’s world‑class collection of twentieth‑ and twenty‑first‑century art resources. The Assistant Librarian plays a vital role in facilitating research, developing collection guides, and ensuring an exceptional user experience across the Library’s services and systems.

Experience

  • One to three years’ experience with reference and readers’ services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of twentieth and twenty‑first‑century art, art historical reference sources and other related research material.
  • Experience with an integrated library system (e.g., III Sierra, Alma) and electronic resources.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates outstanding team orientation, flexibility, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail‑oriented with ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds and to reach high and low shelves.

Required Education: ALA‑accredited Master’s Degree in Information or Library Science.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in art history or relevant subject area and previous art library experience.
  • Experience using the Alma/Primo VE integrated library system.
  • Reading knowledge of one or more languages in addition to English.

Responsibilities

  • Provides reader services to Museum staff and the public, including reference, access, circulation, paging and reshelving, preparing materials for transport, and referrals.
  • Assists implementing orientations for staff, interns, and the public.
  • Develops research guides to the collection.
  • Works closely with library ALRC staff to review and improve services.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in relevant subject areas and art librarianship.
  • Initiates and implements special projects.
  • Performs other duties reasonably related to the position.
  • Supports acquisitions and ILL activities.

Reports to: Head of Library Services

Salary: The salary for this position is $67,828 per annum.
