Assistant Professor of Music (Music Theory Coordinator & Instrumental Studio)
Position Summary
The University of Wisconsin‑Platteville seeks an outstanding Music Theorist and instrumental performer/educator to join the Performing and Visual Arts department as a tenure‑track Assistant Professor of Music (Music Theory Coordinator & Instrumental Studio), beginning August 2026. This faculty member will teach upper‑level courses in the undergraduate music theory and aural skills sequence and serve as coordinator of the Music Theory/Aural Skills course sequence. In addition, they will teach applied lessons on a primary instrument (preference given to candidates specializing in flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, or percussion) and contribute to the growth of a vibrant instrumental studio. We seek a collaborative colleague who will inspire and recruit students, contribute to the continued growth of our music program, and actively engage in performance, scholarship, and service. This is a full‑time, benefit‑eligible position with a salary of $60,000 per academic year.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Coordinate the music theory and aural skills sequence; teach Theory III–IV, Aural Skills III–IV, and Theory V (Post‑Tonol/Advanced Theory), using solfege as a primary tool.
- Teach applied lessons on a primary instrument (woodwinds or percussion strongly preferred).
- Coordinate all activities related to the applied instrumental studio, including private lessons, recruitment, and ensemble participation.
- Build and maintain a thriving instrumental studio through active student recruitment, retention, outreach, and mentoring.
- Teach other courses as assigned, which may include Introduction to Music Technology, Music Techniques, or General Education courses (e.g., Music Appreciation), depending on expertise.
- Coach chamber ensembles and/or assist with large ensembles as appropriate.
- Contribute to departmental service, advising, assessment, and curriculum development.
- Maintain an active profile as a performer, scholar, and teacher in the field.
- Participate in departmental concerts, juries, recruitment events, and festivals.
