The Dispatcher/Communications Officer responds to both emergency and routine radio and telephone communications, performs computerized data entry and retrieval, monitors alarms and surveillance cameras, and remotely controls building openings and closings.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate the highly technical Communications Center for the entire Marquette University Police Department.
- Enter and retrieve criminal justice/law enforcement and statistical information from computerized data sources and external sites.
- Coordinate emergency and non-emergency responses to crime, medical or fire related incidents. Work with and direct all Municipal emergency response units to the scene.
- Monitor campus alarm systems, security/surveillance cameras, and emergency telephones. Detect and report criminal activities in an attempt to deter.
- Provide directions to campus visitors and assist walk-in victims of crime or individuals expressing specific safety and security concerns.
- Maintain emergency and non-emergency information binders and databases to assure current listings and response procedures.
- Assist with parking assignments, special requests and permissions, and complaints.
- Provide logistical support for the Parking and Traffic Division as required and Administrative areas.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Requires high school education, extensive background investigation, and a drug screen.
- Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Diplomacy and tact in dealing with sensitive situations.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.
- Ability to interact professionally and effectively with diverse publics is required.
- Possess accurate typing skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions.
- Ability to read and understand maps, directions, and spatial relationships.
- Familiarity with computers, specifically data entry is necessary.
- Strong commitment to providing top-quality customer service.
- The ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and assigned overtime hours is required.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Familiarity with criminal justice/law enforcement systems, including the TIME system, and CJIS security requirements, is preferred.
