Reports To: Assigned Campus Principal/Librarian Days/Dates: 187 (8/4/2025 - 5/29/2026)

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Library Assistant ensures smooth and efficient operation of the library and sets daily priorities based on knowledge of the overall function of the library and performs work as required or assigned. When the librarian is off campus, the Library Assistant steps in to ensure operations of the library continue to provide students with opportunities to access the library.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 48 college hours or have met formal academic assessment as required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
  • Valid Texas educational aide certificate
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination
  • Valid Texas driver's license with driving record that meets District requirements
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge of basic computer operations and skills
  • Ability to operate personal computer and educational software
  • Ability to work with students and teachers effectivelyAbility to communicate effectively
  • Library experience preferred
  • Ability to file books following district cataloging system
Experience:
  • One year of experience working with children
  • One year of clerical experience
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Library Program Support
  1. Provide excellent customer and informational service.
  2. Understand copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property, and assist others with their understanding and observance of the same.
  3. Create an environment that is conducive to active and participatory learning, resources-based instruction, and collaboration with other teachers on campus.
  4. Join with the school Librarian, teachers and others to plan and implement meaningful experiences that will promote a love of reading for pleasure and information.
  5. Answer questions, locate information, and train staff and/or students in using the library's resources.
  6. Refer questions to a Librarian when appropriate.
  7. Collaborate with the school Librarian as well as other staff and volunteers.
  8. Prepare bulletin boards and displays and assist the librarian in preparing instructional materials.
Accounting and Inventory
  1. Receive and process books, materials, and equipment and reconcile with packing slips and invoices.
  2. Maintain library materials inventory, including keeping accurate records of all materials, loaned equipment, and library books.
  3. Shelve books and other library materials. Share information on district policies and best practices concerning such issues as selection of instructional materials, self-selected reading, copyright, privacy, and acceptable use.
  4. Assist Librarians with the selection, weeding and replacement of materials in the collection.
  5. Maintain student library use records and accounts including overdue notices and the collection of fines.
  6. Collect and maintain records of student fines and prepare parent notification as needed.
  7. Repair books, magazines, materials, and equipment or process for repair at outside facilities (e.g., bindery)
  8. Assist with inventory, storage, and other tasks related to the beginning and end of year procedures.
Clerical Support
  1. Maintain physical and computerized files, including card catalog, vertical file materials, and publisher catalogs.
  2. Prepare bibliographies, forms, purchase orders, requisitions, and routine correspondence using personal computer or typewriter.
  3. Assist librarian in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports.
  4. Plan, initiate and carry to completion, clerical, secretarial and other activities related to the operation of the school's library.
Student Management
  1. Supervise students and assist teachers in maintaining student behavior and an orderly atmosphere.
  2. Supervise the library in the absence of the librarian and/or teachers.
  3. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Typewriter, personal computer, printer, and copier.

Work with continuous interruptions. Maintain emotional control under stress. Climbing, stretching; and frequent lifting of books, boxes, and audiovisual equipment.
