The Role

The Incumbent will serve as the Government Records Archivist and report to the Assistant State Archivist. This position performs complex archival functions involving project planning, processing archival collections, and public engagement, including:

  • Leading or assisting in the development of archival procedures, standards, and workflows for the long-term preservation of permanent records, regardless of format
  • Appraising, transferring, accessioning, arranging, describing, and rehousing archival collections to ensure intellectual control and physical preservation, including monitoring environmental conditions and facilitating researcher access
  • Processing archival collections, including backlogged accessions, and preparing descriptive tools and finding aids to enhance public access
  • Providing reference services, including guidance on access to confidential or restricted records in accordance with applicable laws and policies
  • Collaborating with records creators, records management staff, information technology personnel, and donors on the preservation and access of public records and manuscript collections

  • Archival theory, standards, and best practices
  • Archival and library preservation standards, policies, procedures, and techniques
  • Principles and concepts of information governance across all phases of the records lifecycle
  • Organization and functions of government at the state and local levels
  • Risk mitigation and disaster preparedness for records as part of continuity of operations planning

The Connecticut State Library is an Executive Branch agency that provides library, information, archival, public records, museum, and administrative services for citizens of Connecticut and for state government officials. Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)

In the State Library this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of complex professional library tasks in management services, patron services, library services and historical services.

Examples of Duties

  • Answers complex reference questions utilizing specialized reference tools
  • Provides information referrals for legal, historical, genealogical and other special subject researchers
  • Operates a medium-sized law library
  • Indexes legislative records and other specialized collections
  • Coordinates serials and holdings control
  • Performs original cataloging and name authority work for items of intermediate difficulty including Connecticut documents and monographs
  • May train assigned staff
  • May coordinate or conduct workshops
  • May serve as liaison to groups and organizations
  • Performs related duties as required

Knowledge, Skills and Ability

Minimum Qualifications - General Experience

A Master’s degree in library science or information science from an ALA-accredited library school AND at least one year of post-graduate degree experience in a relevant area of professional library work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with archival project planning and management
  • Experience with processing archival collections
  • Experience with an archival collection management system or ArchiveSpace
  • Experience with Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and Encoded Archival Description (EAD)
  • Experience interpreting and applying federal and state laws and regulations governing confidentiality and access to government records

Special Requirements

  • The State Librarian may determine other advanced educational degrees equivalent to the MLS degree based on staffing needs.
  • Incumbents may be assigned to special projects requiring advanced level professional library duties as directed by the State Librarian.
