Evening Student Supervisor Specialist I, Main Library — The University of Georgia

Posting Details: External; Work Schedule typically 1-10pm Sundays-Thursday; schedule may change during breaks and intersession. Posting Date 11/03/2025. Open until filled. Location: Athens, GA.

Responsibilities

  • User Services Operations: work regular shifts at the service desk assisting patrons with circulation, reserves, and resource sharing services; provide basic research information assistance to walk-in patrons; troubleshoot and report issues with public printing, scanning, and study room reservations; perform specialized circulation services such as creating and updating accounts; taking payments for library fees; supervise and serve as a resource for student assistants; interpret policies and procedures and resolve disputes; assist patrons via email or phone with circulation or general information services, including online payment options for library fees; resolve account issues including placing and clearing holds in the Libraries’ and Registrar’s databases; retrieve and prepare material for holds or transport; receive and process UGA and non-UGA materials through the mail and route appropriately; review, and provide feedback on procedures and workflows.
  • Student Staff Management: review applications, interview, and provide feedback for hiring decisions; train and mentor student assistants; supervise and direct the work of student assistants in the absence of the Lead Student Supervisor; correct and approve student time cards; evaluate and provide feedback on student assistants’ performance; recommend, review, and provide feedback on student assistant training.
  • Accessibility & Collections Maintenance: retrieve and scan materials to be placed on reserve or scanned for electronic reserves; perform optical character recognition (OCR) on scanned documents to create searchable and screen-reader compatible PDFs; remediate PDF documents by adding proper document structure, including headings, reading order, alternative text for images, and tagged content; verify that materials meet accessibility requirements using accessibility tools and checkers; assist the Shelving unit with stacks maintenance activities.
  • Other Position-related Responsibilities: participate in unit and departmental meetings and projects; participate in library-wide communication; maintain flexibility and awareness of changes and needs in the department and Libraries by assuming similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications
One year of experience working in a library or similar setting.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies

  • Ability to competently use a computer for data entry, communication, and file management; familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Teams; accessibility remediation software including Adobe Acrobat Pro and ABBYY FineReader.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with library patrons; ability to supervise the work of others and provide mentorship; ability to perform clerical tasks accurately with close attention to detail; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to learn and execute WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards and best practices for document accessibility; effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to process payments with checks and credit cards.
