Instructor Pool UX Design, UI Design, and UX Research UC Berkeley Extension — Inside Higher Ed
UC Berkeley Extension invites applications for a pool of qualified instructors in UX Design, UI Design, and UX Research to teach online courses for our Arts and Humanities department. Applications are reviewed as needs arise; the applicant pool remains in place for 9-12 months. Some appointments may begin as early as the spring semester.
Position overview
Position title: Instructor (Non-Senate, Non-Tenure Track)
Salary range: Compensation varies by course delivery format. Synchronous Live Online courses: approximately $1,500 - $3,600 total per course. Asynchronous Fixed Date Online courses: $150 - $170 per enrolled student; total ranges approximately $1,200 - $3,400 per course. Compensation may be shared among co-instructors depending on content taught.
Percent time: Part-time by agreement on a course-by-course basis.
Anticipated start: Some appointments may begin as early as the spring semester.
Review timeline: Applications are considered as needs arise; this pool does not guarantee a position. The pool remains in place for 9-12 months; reapplication is required to remain beyond the closing date.
Position duration: Course length varies by subject, level, format, and credits; typically 6–12 weeks per term. Further course agreements may be assigned based on program needs, meritorious performance, and funding availability.

- Most synchronous courses are offered in the evening or on weekends (Pacific Time).

General duties
The department seeks instructors who support student success through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy. Duties vary by instruction method:
- Synchronous Live Online (Zoom): syllabus development, assignment design, lesson planning, course materials, Canvas updates, delivering lectures and activities for required hours.
- Asynchronous Online (Fixed Date): review syllabus and course content, use Canvas tools, and coordinate training needs with Program/Department Director.
- For all instruction: complete mandated trainings, respond to student inquiries promptly, grade assignments and post final grades, use approved platforms (Canvas, Zoom, Google Workspace, etc.), follow policies and guidelines, and respond to Program/Department Director as needed.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent international degree.
Additional qualifications (required at start)
- 5+ years of professional industry work experience since degree, or 5+ years of teaching experience since degree.
- USA residency and USA work authorization: all work in the United States; visa sponsorship not provided.
Preferred qualifications
- Advanced degree in UX Design (preferred).
- 5+ years in UX design, AI, voice design, web/design development, product design, interaction design, HCI, cognitive science, psychology, anthropology, or sociology.
- Experience with User Research Methods (quantitative/qualitative).
- Design thinking proficiency; tool proficiencies (Figma, InVision, Miro, Mural, UXPin, or AI apps).
- Experience with AR/MR/VR; VUI design tools (e.g., Voiceflow, ASK, Action Builder, Web Speech API).
- Experience writing technical content and specs; teaching online; syllabus and objective building; inclusive pedagogy.
- Strong communication, organization, collaboration, and tech proficiency (Canvas, Panopto, Zoom, Google Workspace, etc.).
