Job Description
The Law Librarian is an integral part of the City Attorney’s Office, providing research services and training to support attorneys and staff across all practice teams. The position manages the library’s administrative work including budgeting, acquisitions, serials control, collection maintenance, contract negotiations, and invoice processing. The library’s resources are located in City Hall and Fox Plaza.
Responsibilities
- Develop and manage the law library annual budget.
- Prioritize library resources to meet legal research needs, evaluate current and alternate resources, and recommend renewals or purchases.
- Conduct research for employees in a timely, accurate, and cost-effective manner.
- Advise attorneys and staff on research strategy and resource selection.
- Train employees on library resources, develop and deliver in‑person, hybrid, and asynchronous training, and produce guides, newsletters, and intranet pages.
- Negotiate library contracts and manage orders, renewals, and invoices.
- Provide employee onboarding to library services, including subscription accounts.
- Manage physical resources, including checking in and processing materials, filing, and shelving.
- Handle desk copy surveys, orders, and distribution.
- Route print and electronic newsletters.
- Process invoices.
- Collaborate on knowledge management initiatives, including generative‑AI tools.
- Supervise other library personnel (as needed).
Minimum Qualifications
- Master of Library Science (M.L.S.), Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.), or equivalent from an ALA‑accredited school; and/or
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA‑accredited law school.
Experience
- Three months of experience working as a law librarian.
Desired Qualifications
- Two or more years of experience as a law librarian in a law firm setting.
- Three or more years of experience in vendor management, acquisitions, cataloging, and technical services.
- Knowledge of Westlaw, Lexis, internet legal resources, and other online databases and software.
- Interest in new technologies and resources, including generative AI.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and web‑based information delivery services (Koha ILS, LibGuides).
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.

- Responsible, reliable, with strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines.
- Proactively stays current on new products and services.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, crouch, reach to reshelve items, and push/pull a wheeled cart with books.
