Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - History

The Harris County Public Library (HCPL) system, established in 1921, began as a collection of small libraries located in stores, post offices, and private homes. Over the years, it has grown into a robust network comprising 26 branch libraries, two technology service centers, and two partner locations that provide collection and circulation services. HCPL serves the communities of unincorporated Harris County and cities without independent library systems.

In 2024, HCPL received the prestigious National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the highest honor awarded to libraries in the United States. Bestowed annually by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), this award recognizes institutions that deliver exceptional service to their communities. What you will do at Harris County Public Library

Responsible for a wide array of tasks designed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable library experience for patrons. Duties include patron assistance, engaging in activities and program delivery, outreach, and maintenance of library materials. Delivers comprehensive customer service, actively connects patrons with the information they need, and efficiently handles circulation tasks. Supports innovative library programs, demonstrating a thorough understanding of all library operations and consistently delivering an exceptional customer service experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as the first point of contact for library customer service assistance and information related to library services, fees, procedures, city information, directions, or other issues
  • Accurately enter, retrieve, review, or modify data; handle sensitive customer information; provide Voter Registration assistance; and handle cash transactions
  • Answers incoming telephone calls and responds to patron emails
  • Promote library services in the library, during outreach events, and to the community
  • Assist patrons with requests for assistance, computers, and the use of the copy machine; Maintain an adequate supply of copy paper in paper trays
  • Maintains customers’ accounts using the integrated library system software in the library and during outreach events, utilizing databases or other software programs
  • Handles the checking‑in and delivery process for new, reserved, returned, and incoming items
  • Pulls expired holds, routes books to other locations when necessary, runs reports, and inspects materials for damage, withdraws items in need of repair from circulation, and actively searches for lost items on the shelves.
  • Shelves library materials, sorts and arranges items on book carts for shelving, retrieves misshelved and displaced items, locates specific items within library collections, conducts routine shelf readings, and consistently maintains the order of materials on shelves
  • Performs general tasks related to library operations, which may include recording door statistics, relocating book carts, turning equipment on and off, checking patrons’ items when alarms sound, and maintaining the overall cleanliness and appearance of the library
  • Participates in the preparation and maintenance of displays and exhibits
  • Maintains and assembles outreach promotional materials, including bookmarks, brochures, bulletins, forms, giveaways, and procedural books
  • Maintains supplies for assigned area: monitors inventory levels of library supplies; initiates requests for new or replacement materials
  • Attends and actively participates in staff meetings, library events, and training sessions to improve skills and gain professional knowledge
  • Other duties as assigned

Education

  • High School diploma or GED equivalency

Experience

  • One (1) year of verifiable Customer Service experience

Additional Information

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • At times, work can be performed in an outdoor environment and possible exposure to inclement weather or various temperature changes.
  • There could be exposure to dangerous or aggressive/adverse populations.

Physical Demands

  • Sitting for long periods; light physical activity that may include walking, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying. Ability to lift, carry, and exert up to 25 pounds. Occasionally lifts, carries, and exerts up to 40 pounds.
