Energy Reporter in Residence

Purpose

The energy industry is expanding and always changing. It’s also inherently interdisciplinary. Engineers and data scientists need storytellers and communication experts to help share the truth and nuance about what’s happening in the energy space. Some of the most important research and innovation in the energy arena is happening at The University of Texas. The Energy Reporter in Residence will make sure the public knows this.

Through independent enterprise reporting, the Energy Reporter in Residence will produce high quality journalism for distribution to major media outlets and energy-specific platforms. They will collaborate with University of Texas faculty and staff to support energy research, literacy and innovation. They will act as a mentor to students, give lectures and communication advice to faculty and staff, and raise the profile of the Energy Institute at The University of Texas at Austin and its partner organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Produce podcasts and articles for distribution on mainstream media and energy-specific online outlets
  • Host panels, live networking events, and speaking engagements for the UT Energy Institute and partners
  • Writing, editing and idea generation as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least ten years of experience reporting, producing, and editing audio journalism in energy and related fields.
  • Knowledge of The University of Texas at Austin energy research ecosystem.
  • Extensive experience researching and reporting on energy systems in Texas.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field

Working Conditions

  • This position is part-time, expected to work 30 hours per week
  • Typical office environment
  • Research and reporting in the field from various locations
  • Travel required
  • Weekend and evening work may be required

Employment Eligibility
