Join to apply for the SERVICE WRITER role at Owen Equipment Company. Owen Equipment, an Owen Company, is looking to hire an experienced Service Writer to join our growing team. We are one of the largest Vactor and Elgin dealers in the United States and sell, service and rent sewer cleaners, vacuum excavators, street sweepers and related accessories. We are expanding our product line to include Elliott & Versalift targeted to the Utility sector to complement our Truvac Excavation line. We maintain five full‑service locations in Portland, Oregon; Kent, Washington; Spokane, Washington; Fairfield, California; and Salt Lake City, Utah and our customer base consists of the largest municipalities and contractors in the Western U.S. and is looking to develop and expand our customer base to the Utility sector both in the private and public sector. Our equipment is critical to keeping our streets and sewer systems clean, locating buried infrastructure during construction projects, as well as disaster recovery and helping to build and maintain our electrical grid.

Salary: $22.00 - $28.00 an hour depending on experience.

Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated and customer‑focused Service Writer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering exceptional service to parts customers both in person and over the phone. You will also support daily operations by assisting with inventory management, order fulfillment, invoicing, shipping, and receiving.
Service Writer Responsibilities
- Developing strong customer relationships through the successful management of products and service delivery.
- Maintaining computerized customer profile information.
- Monitoring customer records to check for regular scheduled servicing and future remedial work and calling the customer to arrange appointments.
- Developing cost estimates, logging needed parts, and the time needed for repairs, and scheduling the most appropriate Service Technician.
- Conveying all necessary information regarding costs, parts, work, and Technicians to the customers and management.
- Meeting with customers to discuss their requirements and relaying those requirements to the Service Technicians.
- Contacting customers in the case of additional work to relay the details and extra costs.
- Entering the details of repair jobs on the company’s network and preparing repair instructions and lists of needed replacement parts to the Service Technicians.
- Checking warranties and insurance, working in close contact with factory representative to obtain warranty authorizations, and filing warranty claims for all warranty repairs made.
- Maintaining knowledge base of the evolving products and service.
- Upselling any additional repairs needed.
- Assist service manager as needed.
- Releasing repaired equipment to the customers and explaining the work done and costs accrued to the customers to ensure their satisfaction and repeat business.
Service Writer Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Work experience and product knowledge may be advantageous.
- Computer literacy and knowledge of office software programs.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Strong record‑keeping skills.
- The ability to understand and relate technical issues to the service team from customers’ non‑technical descriptions.
To be successful in this role, you should have the following qualifications:
- Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in varying weather conditions.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is an asset.
