Library Administration Center: 510 Stitt Rd. Charlotte, NC 28213 The Library Administration Center (LAC) serves as the hub for back‑of‑house library operations. Located in East Charlotte, the LAC houses an archival vault and digitization lab. It also temporarily houses special collections materials. This position will be based at LAC but will also spend time at the Main Library location in uptown Charlotte when it opens in Spring 2027.
Position Summary The Outreach Archivist will serve as a bridge between the archives and the community, focusing on historically under‑represented voices. This role centers on building trust with individuals, cultural groups, and local organizations; developing outreach programs, oral histories, and exhibitions that surface diverse stories; and acquiring and preserving materials that reflect these communities. This role will also ensure description practices and access are inclusive and culturally responsive, while collaborating with staff and partners to strengthen equity in what is collected and shared.
Essential Functions
Build and maintain relationships with historically under‑represented communities to expand the scope and inclusivity of the archives.
Develop and lead outreach initiatives, including oral history projects, workshops, presentations, and community events.
Identify, acquire, and preserve archival materials that reflect diverse voices and experiences.
Collaborate with community partners and library staff to design programs, exhibitions, and resources that highlight under‑documented histories.
Manage the Robinson‑Spangler Carolina Room Facebook group and engage with community members online through posts and comments.
Serve as a resource and advocate for archival description, special collections cataloging, and access practices that are culturally responsive and respectful.
Provide in‑depth reference services, working directly with researchers and the public to connect them with archival and special collections.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of two years of public library experience.
Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA‑accredited institution.
NC Public Library certification required or must be obtained within 12 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated interest in archives through coursework and/or internships.
Experience with library outreach initiatives and/or working with underserved populations.
Experience with or coursework related to collecting oral histories.
Social media management experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of
Library science.
Reference interview process.
Familiarity with the library’s classification system, cataloging interface of the Online Public Access Catalog and OCLC/MARC records.
Skills
