Communications Director

Oceana is seeking an experienced and strategic Communications Director to lead national media and public relations efforts that elevate the organization’s U.S. campaigns and inspire action for the oceans.
The Communications Director will oversee a talented U.S. communications team and drive Oceana’s media presence across national, regional, and issue-based outlets. From ending overfishing and reducing oil and plastic pollution to protecting endangered species like the North Atlantic right whale, this role ensures that Oceana’s U.S. campaigns receive the widespread public support needed to deliver victories for our oceans.
As a senior member of Oceana’s Global Marketing and Communications team, the Communications Director will develop and execute integrated strategies that strengthen Oceana’s position as the leading voice for ocean conservation in the U.S. They will provide strategic counsel to leadership, manage high-impact media and communications initiatives, and build strong relationships with journalists and editors to secure meaningful coverage and partnerships. Serving as a key media spokesperson, the Communications Director will also prepare Oceana’s experts and advocates for interviews and public appearances. The role requires creativity, collaboration, and the ability to turn complex issues into compelling stories that drive measurable change.
The ideal candidate is an exceptional communicator and leader who thrives in a fast-paced, results-driven environment. They will hold a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field, and bring at least 10 years of professional experience, including five in a management role. They should demonstrate success leading media relations for advocacy, nonprofit, or mission-driven organizations, with established relationships across national media and a strong understanding of today’s media landscape. The position requires a proactive, collaborative approach with a focus on achieving results.
The salary range for this position is $115,000 – $130,00 annually.
