The English Department in the College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo is seeking a full‑time, academic‑year, tenure‑track Assistant Professor to begin August 17, 2026. The position specializes in Creative Writing (Nonfiction) and Latinx/e American literature, and welcomes applicants with secondary specialties in Afro‑Latinx/e literature, Latinx/e avant‑garde/experimental writing, migration studies, border studies, hybrid forms, translingualism, documentary literature, or other related genres. A Ph.D. in Creative Writing, English, or a related field is required.
Salary:
$90,276 – $98,244 per year (or $7,523 – $8,187 per month), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Although Cal Poly is primarily a teaching university, faculty are expected to balance teaching with an active program of research, professional development (including publication), student supervision and advising, and participation in service activities at the department, college, and university levels. The typical teaching load is 12 units per semester, with a reduction in the first two years to support the establishment of a research program. Cal Poly anticipates a potential transition to semester‑based year‑round operations (YRO). Under YRO, full‑time academic‑year faculty may teach in two consecutive semesters, with the possibility of an additional third semester for extra compensation, depending on departmental needs and university policy.

Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Creative Writing, English, or a related field (if ABD, the degree must be conferred before August 2026).
Specialization in Creative Writing (Nonfiction) and Latinx/e Literature.
Demonstrated university teaching experience.
Proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.
Preferred Qualifications
Secondary specialties in Afro‑Latinx/e literature, Latinx/e avant‑garde/experimental writing, migration studies, border studies, hybrid forms, translingualism, documentary literature, or a secondary genre.
Experience and commitment to student‑centered learning and teaching.
Ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary settings.
Experience working with diverse populations and fostering an inclusive environment.
Relevant professional experience and capabilities.
