Senior BHS System Designer

Overview

BHS System Designer – Senior. Location: Denver, Colorado. Industry: Airport/Aviation Logistics Automation. We are seeking an experienced Senior System Designer with a minimum of five years of dedicated experience in the design and layout of large-scale mechanical systems, specifically within the Baggage Handling Systems (BHS) industry. Based in the Denver area, this role is crucial for developing accurate, efficient, and constructible mechanical layouts and detailed design drawings for conveyors, sortation equipment, and structural supports in complex airport environments.

Responsibilities

• Develop detailed two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) mechanical layouts of the BHS using AutoCAD and Revit/BIM software, integrating conveyors, sorters, screening equipment, and passenger interface devices.
• Ensure all mechanical designs adhere to performance specifications, architectural requirements, operational flow, and regulatory guidelines, including TSA Program Guideline Design Standards (PGDS).
• Collaborate with engineering teams (Controls, Electrical, Structural) and architects to resolve spatial conflicts, optimize equipment placement, and ensure seamless system integration.
• Produce precise manufacturing and installation drawing packages, including assembly details, part lists, and equipment interface requirements.
• Perform mechanical calculations for conveyor sizing, motor positioning, and structural support loads in coordination with structural engineers.
• Manage the incorporation of vendor-specific equipment models and specifications into the master design drawings.
• Participate in design review meetings, identifying potential risks, and proposing value engineering solutions to improve constructability and reduce cost.
• Prepare final documentation and redline mark-ups for project closeout and as-built records.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or an equivalent technical field is preferred; relevant design experience is required.
• Minimum of five (5) years of direct experience performing mechanical design and layout for Baggage Handling Systems (BHS), complex conveyor systems, or automated logistics facilities.
• Expert proficiency in AutoCAD and advanced knowledge of 3D modeling/BIM software (Revit) for design and coordination.
• Strong technical understanding of the mechanical components and functionality of baggage handling equipment (e.g., belt conveyors, diverters, sortation machines).
• Proven ability to read and interpret civil, structural, architectural, and electrical drawings to ensure full coordination of the mechanical system.
• Familiarity with airport security and design standards, specifically relating to BHS environments.
• Excellent spatial reasoning and communication skills for coordinating design elements across multiple disciplines.
• Must be able to pass necessary background checks and obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge for work at secure airport locations.
