Arlington County's Public Library is recruiting for a
Library Associate
to join our team at The Shop, Central Library's Makerspace. This role focuses on maker and technology programming for all ages, supporting hands-on learning and community engagement. Responsibilities include assisting patrons, maintaining equipment, and leading innovative programs, especially for diverse audiences including those with limited English proficiency.
Responsibilities
Specific duties include: Supervising patrons within the lab/shop environment and maintaining their safety, and being available to answer questions; Performing maintenance and troubleshooting tasks on computers and equipment, and operating maker equipment including, but not limited to, 3D printers, laser cutters, and sewing machines; Working with a team to deliver Maker programming that promotes various library initiatives; Serving on programming, service development, technology, and/or outreach committees or teams; and Providing customer service assistance to patrons in person at a service desk, by telephone, email, and virtually The ideal candidate will be creative, energetic, possess strong collaboration and communication skills, and be knowledgeable about current and emerging trends in technology and Makerspaces in public libraries.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Library Science, Education, Instructional Engineering, Instructional Design, Instructional or Educational Technology, or related field. Some experience in library operations or related field. Substitution:
Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Master's degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science may substitute for the experience in library operations.
Desirable : Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
Utilizing technology and delivering Maker services in a library setting; Providing customer service to a diverse population, especially in the area of makerspace technology; Operational knowledge of Maker equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and sewing machines; and/or Audiovisual digitization equipment and audiovisual materials handling;
Additional Information
Hours:
Full-time, 40 hours per week. The schedule includes some evening and weekend hours; actual work schedule is determined by the needs of the work location. The current vacancy is at Central Library, 1015 N. Quincy Street, however the location may change over time.
