Established digital media group is seeking talented editors and journalists to produce articles on the business and investment sector in Colombia, the Caribbean and Central America. You will own your time but be responsible for results (quantity AND quality). Successful candidates will demonstrate impeccable knowledge of news and press, and with established contacts and sources.
Responsibilities
Ensure prompt turnaround of news materials
Coordinate day-to-day coverage of current events
Develop ideas for articles or content based on readership and news section
Once you have demonstrated your ability: Manage freelance journalists and writers, ensuring their product quality meets our standards
Verify data and information, ensuring the veracity of all articles before publishing them
Write and edit copy, ensuring that all writing is of high quality, and at a fair level for our readers
Ensure that articles have headlines and good photos and graphics
Identify regional writers and journalists to contribute to the portal
Teach and manage contributors about editorial standards and our policy
Use sources, such as press releases, radio, television, the internet and direct contacts with sources and authorities, to investigate news
Check content to avoid plagiarism and ensure authenticity
Requirements
2 years of demonstrable experience as a journalist or news editor
Native professional level English + Spanish fluency.
Ability to write and edit effective and interesting copy
Ability to work under pressure and in a hurry
Creativity, ability to imagine how an idea will be interpreted after writing
Deep knowledge of social media, how to use them and how to apply them in the branch of journalism
Domain of software applications and computers
Ability to write without political or philosophical bias
You must be able to write in US-style North American English - grammar, vocabulary, spelling, etc.
Personal Qualities
Friendly personality, with encouragement, judgment and leadership
Analytical way of thinking
Excellent ability to communicate: verbal and written
High level of personal organization and ability to work without heavy oversight
Creative with broad curiosity and passionate about exploring ideas and concepts
Ability to work under pressure and with tight deadlines
Excellent ability to plan, organize, and present
Pay Structure
$5 USD each: Rewrite press releases, removing the fluff, and when necessary, asking for photos from the issuer
$10 USD each: Edit raw interview transcripts into finished articles, research and write full articles, 3-4 sources, generally 400-800 words, obtaining photos
Our goal is to hire a full time editor. However, to avoid mistakes and to ensure a good fit, we will pay the candidates we select on a per-article basis, as indicated here. When the right candidate reveals himself or herself based on demonstrated capability, the freelancer may be offered a full-time salaried contract position.
