The position oversees a staff team of four professionals managing marketing, brand assets, digital distribution, social media, events, community partnerships and volunteer engagement. The role works with the communications team on resource allocation to connect with new and existing audiences, using data to determine distribution of WUWM‑created content beyond our radio broadcast. As WUWM moves toward a multi‑platform media organization, a cohesive regional communications strategy and supportive team structure are required.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the communications team and station leaders to design and execute a regional organizational communication strategy that advances the station’s mission and vision.
  • Design and manage team organizational infrastructure and processes to support communication initiatives.
  • Partner with departments and staff across the organization to identify, support, fund and amplify content and organizational initiatives on WUWM’s various traditional and digital platforms.
  • Shape and advocate for a consistent station narrative for clarity and resonance across the current audience and growing segments.
  • Work with the development team to advance funding initiatives that support content and campaigns.
  • Plan, assign and guide work among the communication team to attract and connect with new and existing audience segments.
  • Understand and integrate data and audience strategies into the distribution of WUWM’s content across all non‑broadcast platforms.
  • Track and analyze performance across the core areas to demonstrate impact and inform future strategy.
  • Project‑manage a diverse array of initiatives with the team, both providing oversight and accountability while actioning tactical items as needed to support the work, the team and the station.
  • Manage budget and business functions for the unit with the support of the operations team.
  • Supervise, hire, coach and evaluate the team.
  • Set clear individual and team goals and hold staff accountable to outcomes.
  • Support training, professional development and growth for individual team members.
  • Advocate for the team and ensure they have the resources they need to succeed.
  • Serve as a leader and member of the management team that advises, collaborates and communicates across the organization, amplifying and executing consistent, cross‑departmental strategies.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Direct and evaluate communications projects, including design, production and delivery of internal and external publications.
  • Exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE employees.
  • Develop communications campaigns, programs, and/or projects in alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Serve as a liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing communications information and representing the interests of the unit.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of communications‑focused strategic planning initiatives and objectives.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of operating policies and procedures to promote communications in alignment with the strategic plan.
  • Assist with developing and auditing the unit’s communications budget.
