Position Overview
**This position works only 19 hours per week*
Be part of an energetic and forward-thinking library team dedicated to inspiring curiosity and supporting lifelong learning. In this role, you'll play a vital part in connecting our community to valuable resources, technology, and programs. From providing access to computers, research tools, and printing services to assisting with diverse information needs, you'll help ensure every visitor has the tools and support to succeed.

Examples of Duties

  • Staffs a public services point
  • Performs proactive reference at the service desk
  • Assists customers with information and technology resources
  • Performs basic troubleshooting of library equipment and trains others in the use of resources and equipment
  • Assists customers with self-services checkout and account information at Circulation desk to include cash, check, and credit card transactions
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and two (2) years of relevant public library experience or progressive customer relations experience in the public sector; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Manager's Preference: Library experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of library procedures, collection management, library systems and services
  • Knowledge of readers' advisory methods and sources
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with co-workers and general public
  • Ability and knowledge to provide basic library information services and other customer assistance
  • Ability to instruct customers on use of equipment, public computer reservation software, and self-checkout as needed and where applicable
  • Ability to use computers, competently manipulate keyboard and spell accurately
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public

In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).

Successful candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment with Cumberland County must pass pre-employment screenings, including criminal history checks and drug screenings, as required by Cumberland County Policies and Procedures, prior to beginning work or receiving a final offer of employment.
