Overview
Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. The teacher monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). The role requires physical demands as required by the duties and responsibilities of the job. Special requirements include attending school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, particularly in behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions.
Job Specific Information
The wage range for this position is a salary between 40% of $64,591 and $131,472 based on education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools curriculum for the grade/content range of the position and the MCPS special education program.
Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research‑based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments.
Knowledge of and the ability to apply the six performance standards established for the Montgomery County Public Schools Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Ability to provide instructional support and work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians of students with disabilities.
Excellent communication skills.
Knowledge of and understanding of the Every Student Succeeds Act, Individuals with Disabilities Act, and state and federal policies and procedures related to special education.
Education, Training & Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years teaching experience at a level appropriate to the assignment (elementary or secondary).
Certification requirements: Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
