Director of Design-Build Program (Lecturer Calendar Year)
Location:
UMass Amherst, Department of Environmental Conservation (ECo) and Department of Architecture
Appointment:
Full-time, 100% lecturer, calendar year 100% appointment, 12 months.
Overview The Building and Construction Technology Program (BCT) and the Department of Architecture at UMass Amherst invite applications for a full-time lecturer to serve as Director and primary instructor for the UMass DesignBuild program. The DesignBuild program is a service‑learning effort that allows students from multiple disciplines to construct a small house or other project each year as an academic exercise and then provide that structure to a local community partner and/or the University for affordable housing efforts.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching:
Lead a 6‑credit undergraduate and graduate DesignBuild studio in spring, conduct two 6‑credit DesignBuild build courses in summer, and teach the BCT 313 light‑frame residential construction course in fall.
Construction Management:
Prepare the UMass DesignBuild site, procure materials and equipment, instruct students in construction procedures, coordinate with code officials and contractors, and complete construction to deliver the finished structure to the community partner.
Program Management:
Solicit and procure projects for the DesignBuild program, negotiate agreements with community partners, manage program finances, interface with University accountants, and oversee fundraising and outreach to donors, town officials, and AEC professionals.
Collaborative Leadership:
Work collaboratively with colleagues in the CNS and HFA communities to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness, and support the University’s strategic priorities related to experiential learning.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in architecture, building science, construction technology, construction management, civil engineering, or equivalent.
Construction Supervisor License (CSL) in Massachusetts or equivalent (by the time of hire).
OSHA 10 Safety License (by the time of hire).
Previous onsite experience in light‑frame construction and previous teaching experience in construction and/or design programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Architect license in Massachusetts (by the time of hire).
OSHA 30 safety license.
Salary Information Expected salary range: $80,117.00 – $118,067.00, based on collective bargaining agreement and individual factors.
