Teacher Librarian (0.5 FTE) – Baker Middle School

Salary Level: Based on preparation level and experience per TEA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Range is $73,549 (BA + 0 step 1) through $144,248 (MA + 90 step 20)

Hours per day: 7.5

Union/Days per year: Teacher, 182 workdays, 10‑month

This position plans, organizes and provides learning activities in a classroom environment designed to fulfill students' potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth.

Essential Job Functions (Teacher)

  • Develop and strategize a program of study based on students' learning needs, interests and abilities.
  • Assess student growth, provide progress reports, maintain grades, refer students for evaluation, and give guidance to promote welfare and citizenship.
  • Implement district educational goals, assist administration in applying district policies, establish classroom behavior rules, manage behavior, and participate in curriculum planning.
  • Develop lesson plans, provide differentiated instruction, and align instructional materials with clear learning objectives.
  • Maintain open communication with students, parents, colleagues, and community members; conduct conferences and meetings.
  • Maintain accurate records, use data to inform instruction, and apply state-approved growth rubrics.
  • Take precautions to protect students, equipment and facilities; supervise students during school activities.

Essential Job Functions (Librarian)

  • Promote intellectual freedom and critical thinking, provide resources, and create an atmosphere of free inquiry.
  • Collaborate with teachers to plan meaningful literacy experiences.
  • Design and implement inquiry‑based, standards‑aligned learning activities.
  • Engage learners with print and digital resources, addressing individual differences.
  • Empower students through personalized learning experiences.
  • Develop and maintain collections aligned with district goals and promote ethical use of information.
  • Ensure equitable physical access to learning resources.
  • Provide professional development, foster creativity, and collaborate with the community.

Other Job Duties

  • Maintain professional competence via continuing education and training.
  • Attend staff meetings, serve on committees, supervise paraprofessionals, and support peers.
  • Collaborate with parents and colleagues to improve student learning.
  • Keep updated on curriculum guides and resources.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate reliable attendance and readiness to meet job demands.

Conditions

Work may involve: securing substitutes, handling sensitive situations, weather exposure, noise, lifting up to 20 pounds, and other physical demands.

Qualifications – Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university with appropriate educational endorsement; or equivalent experience, training, and knowledge.
  • Bachelor's degree with Library Media endorsement or ability to obtain within two years.
  • Master's in Library Information Science with School Library focus (preferred) or Master's in Education with Library Media endorsement and ability to obtain within two years (preferred).
  • Preferred: two years of classroom teaching experience.

Licenses / Special Requirements

  • Valid Washington State teaching certificate.
  • Completion of required district training.
  • Fingerprinting and WSP/FBI background clearance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Washington and federal regulations.
  • Knowledge of subject matter and course content.
  • Skills in assessment, instructional methods, information exchange, critical thinking, problem solving, student discipline, customer service, organization, multi‑tasking, communication, technology use, judgment, flexibility, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate activities, and employ technology.
  • Ability to build relationships, collaborate, mentor, and comply with district policies.
  • Ability to meet attendance and physical requirements.
